Az önelfogadás fent bemutatott értelmezései nemcsak abból a szempontból külön
böznek, hogy az epsteinféle leképezési rendszerek melyikére teszik a hangsúlyt, hanem abból is, hogy hogyan értelmezik az önbecsülés vonatkozásában az indi
vidualitást. Branden egyfajta egoközpontú individualitást hangsúlyoz, míg pl. az öndeterminációsok a „másik” autentikus létezésének tiszteletben tartását fel tételező
„kapcsolatban levést”. Bár ez a két megközelítés valamelyest eltér egy mástól, mégis közösek abban, hogy az egészséges személyiségműködés – és egész séges önbecsülés
dinamika – értelmezésekor egy erősen individuális énszerkezet feltételezéséből indulnak ki.
Az individualitás vs. kapcsolódás hangsúlya az énképben komoly szakmai vita tárgya az utóbbi évtizedben. Úgy tűnik, hogy az önbecsülés vonatkozásában sem lehet kikerülni azt a problémát, hogy az énszerkezet jellemzőiben komoly kulturális különbségek lehetnek. A nyugati vs. keleti kultúrák ilyen vonatkozású eltéréseiről, és ennek az önér
tékelési dinamikára vonatkozó következményeiről lásd pl. heine et al. (1999); heine (2005); spenserRodgers et al. (2004); Ross et al. (2005).8

ez az áttekintő tanulmány azt célozza, hogy mindazok, akik az önbecsülés/önértékelés és a testilelki egészség összefüggéseit a saját egészségfejlesztő munkájukban hasznosítani szeretnék, kellően árnyalt képet kapjanak a témáról. legfontosabb üzenetként azt érde
mes tudatosítani, hogy az önbecsülés/önértékelés többarcú jelenség, ezért bármifajta beavatkozás tervezésekor el kell dönteni, hogy mely aspektusával akarunk foglalkozni.
