3.4.3 goals and results

interpretersuseICTtools,andtheresultofusingICTsintheirwork.Question 4asksthe

respondentsaboutthereasonswhytheyuseICTtools,anditalsocontainsanoption“…I

wanttomakemyworkmoreprecise”.Bymarkingthisoption,interpreterscanrefertotheir

generalexperience.32outof34respondentschosethisoption(amongotheroptions).This

showsthatinmostofthecasesthereisatleastonedeliberategoalofusingICTtools.Itis,

however,veryinterestingthatonly11outf32respondentswhoclaimedthattheywanted

tomaketheirworkmoreprecise(Question4),markedtheoption“accuracy”forQuestion 9.

ThismeansthatICTtoolsdidnotmeettheinterpreters’expectationsbecauseotherwisethey

shouldhavemarkedthepositiveanswerabouttheeffectsofICTtools,aswell.Thisbeing

so,itmeansthatinterpreterswerequitecriticalaboutICTs,andtherefore,thepositiveim-agereflectedbyQuestions 9 and 10areslightlyovershadowed.a similarcontradictioncanbe

experiencedfromthoseanswers,whichwhileclaimingthatICTtoolshelpthema lotintheir

work,actuallygivenegativeanswersconcerningtheresultoftheusageofICTs.

Ialsoexaminediftherewasa connectionbetweentheusageoftoolsmadeespeciallyforme- diationbetweenlanguages,andthesepersons’attitudetowardsICTtools:therewasnocor-relationbetweenthesetwofactors.Theresultshowsthatnostrongcorrelationcanbeshown

inthiscase(p=0,113r=0,277).Thenextquestionwaswhethertherewasa correlationbetween

experienceandtheusageofspecialterminologicaltools,buttheresultsshowedthatherethere

wasnocorrelation,either(p=0.149,r=–0.253).

4. ConClusion

ThisstudysurveyedtheICTusinghabitsofaltogether34interpreterswhoworkinHungary.

ItwasdesignedtodiscoverthemostimportantfactorsofusingICTtools.Theresultscan

besummarisedasfollows:alloftherespondentsusesomeICTtoolsinsomephasesoftheir

work.Mostlydependingontheirage,theyeitherstartedtousethematsomepointduring

theircareer,ortheyhavebeenusingthemrightfromthebeginning.Themostimportant

hardwarearePCs,laptopsandsmartphones,whileinthecaseofsoftwaretexteditors,brows-ers,electronicandweb-baseddictionariesaremostcommonlyusedasopposedtoapplications

orspecialterminologysoftware.ConsideringthegoalofICTusage,thewishtomakeone’s

workmorepreciseandthepositiveexperiencewithICTsarethetwomostimportantfactors.

asfarastheeffectofICTontheworkoftheinterpretersisconcerned,themajorityclaim

thatthesetoolsarepartoftheirworkingmethod,andtheydonotconsiderthemasa separate

phenomenon.TherespondentsofthesurveyuseICTtoolsmostlyinthepreparationphases

oftheirinterpretingjobsandduringinterpreting,onlya minoritydoespost-interpretingwork

aswell.TheapproachandattitudetowardsICTtoolsismainlypositive,howevertheirusage

cannotbeconsideredveryfrequent,nearly75%onlyusethema coupleoftimesinanhour

ofsimultaneousinterpreting.easysearchabilityandspeedareperceivedtobethetwomain

advantagesofICTtools,whilethedistracting,disturbingeffectandtechnicalproblemsare

consideredthetwomaindisadvantages.CaIsoftwarearenearlyfullyunknowntothepar-ticipantsofthesurvey,themainhypotheticalexpectationsoftherespondentstowardsthem

wouldbetheeasyusabilityandquicksearchability.

asforinterdependences,a correlativerelationshipcouldonlybedetectedinthreecases,

namelyattitudetowardsICTtoolsshoweda correlationwiththenumberofyearsofinter-pretingexperience,theproportionofsimultaneousinterpretingandthenumberofICTtools

used.

Furtherresearchwillbeconductedintheformofinterviewswithsomeoftherespondents,

andCaIsoftwarearealsogoingtobethesubjectofthefollow-upstudies.
