A. hollandi. kormányt szintén a bécsi udvarnál volt követe, a nem kevesbbé ügyes és munkás Van Hamel BruyÉs az els kísérlet, ninx János Jakab képviselte. mely 1704-ben Gyöngyösön, s majd Selmeczen történt, nem sikerülvén, a következett évben nagyobb ünnepélyesség végett az angol kormány Sunderland, a hollandiak pedig Rechteren grófokat bízták meg, az imént említett követeik hozzájárulása. mellett,. a. békealkudozások vezetésével. Mindnyájan több ízben megfordultak. Magyarországban,. fáradhatatlanul. lelkiismeretesen jártak el tisztökben, lyel sürgették. egyenl. erély-. Bécsben az engedményeket, és. gyarországon a követelések lejebb. s. szállítását.. Ma-. De. a. nagyszombati alkudozások sem vezettek több eredményre mint a selmeczi összejövetel. Mik voltak okai a siker ezen hiányának? az ezen okmánygyüj-. teménybl. A. elég világosan kitnik.. mediátorok, müködésök egész ideje. alatt,. sza-. kadatlan levelezésben állottak illet kormányaikkal,. minden lépésökrl körülményes jelentéseket küldöttek hozzájok, kiktl viszont gyakran utasításokat vettek, és ha külön válva mködtek, folytonos levelezés által egymást arról, a mi kiki körében történt, s. értesítették.. Az. következ okmányok képezik az összes mennyiben az Magyarország ügyeire vonatkozik, melyet az angol kormány diplomatiai ügynökeivel folytatott, a magyar forradalom els itt. levelezést,. a. kitörésétl 1703-tól kezdve. egész a szatmári béke-. A békealkudozások folyama. naplóját a mediátiónak,. alatti. úgy mint a mediátoroknak egymással, a császári s a magyar forradalmi fnökökkel volt levelezését. Magában foglalja mindazt, a mi a béke helyreállításának érdekében vagy annak ellenére történt egy s más részrl, úgy mint a befolyásokat, érdekeket s okokat, melyek hatással voltak az alku-. ministerekkel. dozások folyamára. Magában foglalja végre a cselekvények színhelyérl, a harczmezrl idrl idre érkezett híreket, s mutatja a benyomást, melyet azok elidéztek.. Ezen okmányok legnagyobb részben az eredeti levelekbl vannak lemásolva, a hol pedig az eredeti nem találtatott, ott az illet ministerium vagy követség levelezési naplójából, vagy hivatalos úton küldött, az eredetiekkel egyenl hitelesség, gyakran a követ vagy minister saját keze aláírásával s jegyzeteivel ellátott. A. másolatokból Írattak levelezés. le.. egy része a külföldön lév angol. követek rendes és hivatalos jelentéseikbl, más része pedig csupán az illet államtitkár számára. dalmas tudósításokból illik. kénytelen lévén. terjeszteni külföldön. velezését,. írt. Az eredeti okmányok. séggel. az. feltalálhatók. angol. országos levéltárban, a „Public Record Office "-ban, hol két év óta az egész országos levéltár egyesült,. melynek nevezetes része azeltt egy külön házban, az úgynevezett „State Paper Office "-ban, tartatott. Lajstroma a levéltárnak. még. csak igen kis részben. van, bár rajta folytonosan dolgoznak.. kor. s. ország szerint vannak könyvekbe vagy egyes. csomókba a. foglalva,. sorszámot. helye. Az okmányok. nem. melyek az illet ország nevét 8 Magyarországnak külön álló. viselik.. okmányok. lévén e levéltárban, az azt illet. legnagyobb részben a Németországra vonatkozó. mányok. közt vannak elszórva.. Néhány. iro-. ívet azonban,. okmányok közöl vettem. A „Gei^nany", „Turkey" vagy „Holland" felirás tehát azt jelenti, hogy az illet mely. itt. közöltetik,. a török vagy hollandi. oklevél ezen országok iratgyííjteményében. ,. az ország-. szám alatti kötetben keresend. Van ezenkivül néhány okmány, mely a Britt Múzeumban lév, Stepney György hátrahagyott, nagy részben eredeti, irományai, vagy a hollandi státuspapirosok gyjteményében találtatnak. Végre Marlborough herczeg néhány év eltt megjelent levelezésébl is ide van mellékelve néhány kiegészítésül szolgáló levél. neve mellé. írt. Legérdekesebb s legfontosabb részét ezen gyjteménynek kétségkívül Stepney levelei képezik. O.

(17) XI az angol követek közt legtöbbet foglalkodott a. magyar. ügyekkel, és a mediátióban addig, míg annak tevé-. keny. rész engedtetett a békealkudozási kísérletekben,. mert Stepney Bécsbl elmenetele 1706 végén a mediátió már csak név szerint. vezérszerepet. után. vitt,. azután pedig egészen mellztetett,. létezett rövid ideig,. befolyása minden további békealkudozások az nélkül folytak. S maga a szatmári békekötés is a mediátió minden részvéte nélkül jött létre. s. Stepney jelentései és bizodalmas letesen s. kimerítleg adják. és. azonfelül szabatos,. könny. el. a. rész-. levelei. dolgok. állását,. világos stílben van-. s. nak szerkesztve, tanúságot tevén azon írói tehetségrl, melynek Stepney köszönhette fényes állását. ugyanis azon korban a kormányférfiakban. élt,. whigek. politikai párt fejei, a. midn. az angol irodalom. pártfogókra.. talált. és toryk,. A. két nagy. egymással. vetél-. kedtek az irodalom pártolásában. Dorset és Montague,. Harley. Bolingbroke. nyereményes hivatalokkal jutalmazták az irodalom mezején feltnt tehetségeket. Montague, késbb lord Halifax, maga is írói tehetés. ségének köszönhette magas hivatalát, grófi koronáját s. így emelkedett Addison államtitLocke és Newton, Par-. a térdszalagot.. kárságig, Congreve és Gay,. Rowe úgy. mint több mások, kisebb-nagyobb rangú, de mindig kényelmet biztosító jövedelemmel. nell és. járó. hivatalokat nyertek. Dr. Johnson öreg napjait. elegend nyugpénz melylyel. biztosította. fiatalságában. azon szegénység. küzdött. a. ellen,. tehetségdús. író.. Prior és Stepney fényes követségekre alkalmaztattak.. Egyébiránt. is. Stepney, korának egyik legjele-. sebb diplomatája. volt,. lésben. O. tartatott.. s. kortársai által. 1692. és. nagy becsü-. 1707 között majdnem.

Ezen. idköz. alatt két íz-. ben küldetett mint angol követ a brandenburgi, egy ízben a szász, a mainzi, és a kölni választó-fejedel-. mekhez, egyszer a frankfurti congressushoz, egyszer a lengyel,. s. kétszer. a. bécsi. Fleg. udvarokhoz.. Németországban lévén megbízatásai, annyira megismerkedett a német birodalmi ügyekkel, hogy róla az mondatott, miszerint a német politikát csak kevés német és egy külföldi státusférfi sem ismerte oly alaposan mint Stepney.. 1706-ban a nagyszombati. nem. békealkudozások eredményre e. miatti bosszankodásában ,. vezetvén,. részint. Wratislau gróf. részint. császári ministerrel való ellenségeskedése miatt,. a. állását. bécsi. udvarnál. nehézzé. s. mely. kellemetlenné. tette,. visszahivatását sürgette a kormánynál, és. azon. évben Bécsbl Hágába. utazott,. még. a hová. az. akkoron meghalálozott Stanhope helyébe követnek neveztetett. Itt közel érintkezésbe jött Marlborough herczeggel, mit régóta óhajtott, de. évben. megrongált. már a jöv 1707.. egészsége miatt. kénytelen volt.
