The written r e c o r d s of the Mongolian language h a v e , in the c o u r s e of t i m e , been s c a t t e r e d throughout the world. A p a r t f r o m t e r r i t o r i e s w h e r e Mongol is spoken, Mongolian collections can be found f r o m the Soviet Union through Europe and A m e r i c a to J a p a n , in many p l a c e s in the Northern h e m i s p h e r e . These c o l l e c -tions s e r v e a s b a s i s s o u r c e m a t e r i a l f o r s c h o l a r s and can p e r h a p s be r e g a r d e d a s one of the main f a c t o r s in the cultivation of international fluorishing Mongo-lian r e s e a r c h . The fact that t h e s e s o u r c e s a r e s c a t t e r e d i s , at the s a m e t i m e , a definite b a r r i e r to r e s a r c h a s the m a t e r i a l s to be found in different c o u n t r i e s and different collections have never been and a r e still not easily a v a i l a b l e t o those who need t h e m . Some p r o g r e s s h a s been made in the field of cataloguing collections and publishing c a t a l o g u e s . But the situation r e m a i n s u n s a t i s f a c t o r y . Curiously it i s the l a r g e s t Mongolian collections (of U l a n - B a t o r , Leningrad, Ulan-Ude, Köke Qota) that we know the least of, which m e a n s that the most valuable s o u r c e s of data a r e withheld f r o m s c h o l a r s . All in a l l , l a r g e n u m b e r s of written r e c o r d s of the Mongolian language a r e still lying about in uncatalogued anonymity, like dead c a p i t a l , on the s t o r e - s h e l v e s of l i b r a r i e s .
The Mongolian m a n u s c r i p t s and xylographs of the L i b r a r y of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences have a l s o r e m a i n e d hidden f r o m the outside world. Individual p i e c e s have b e c o m e known through P r o f . Lajos LIGETI* s book (Rapport p r é l i m i n a i r e d ' u n voyage d ' e x p l o r a t i o n fait en Mongolie Chinoise 1928-1931, Budapest 1933);
other MSS and xylographs have been publicized through the studies of Hungarian Mongolists, but they only r e p r e s e n t a fraction of the whole stock and they do not give sufficient i n f o r m a t i o n about the collection a s a whole. Accordingly, taking the opportunity provided by t h i s session I should like to m a k e a few c o m m e n t s on the Mongolian MSS and x y l o g r a p h s of the Oriental Collection of the L i b r a r y of the Hun-g a r i a n Academy of S c i e n c e s .
1. The development of the Mongolian collection divides, chronologically, into t h r e e p h a s e s .
The f i r s t period i s r e p r e s e n t e d by one single work (Mong. 1. A g l o s s a r y of the Mongolian language copied by a European hand with F r e n c h i n t e r p r e t a t i o n s . T h e
Mongolian words a r e written in A r a b i c c h a r a c t e r s . The c o m p o s e r ' s name i s not r e c o r d e d . Undated. ) How and when t h i s copied MS c a m e to be a c q u i r e d is not yet known.
But the second phase saw a g r e a t expansion of the c o l l e c t i o n . In this period the collection of Mongolian MSS and x y l o g r a p h s was e s t a b l i s h e d , thanks to the
e f f o r t s of P r o f . L a j o s Ligeti, who contributed 122 MSS a n d xylographs to the L i b r a r y of the Hungarian Academy of S c i e n c e s . The value of t h i s part of the c o l l e c t i o n is enhached by the many old and unique MSS it c o n t a i n s .
Since about 1956 the Oriental Collection of the L i b r a r y h a s acquired again Mongolian MSS and x y l o g r a p h s and this can be said to be the third period of t h e accumulation of the Mongolian collection. This part of the collection c o n s i s t s of donations and occasional p u r c h a s e s f r o m private p e r s o n s . Although t h e r e h a s not been a consistent policy behind the acquisition of i t e m s , it would be unjust t o s a y that the 164 new i t e m s r e p r e s e n t a quantitative growth only. By lucky a c c i d e n t the L i b r a r y h a s a c q u i r e d many valuable MSS and x y l o g r a p h s .
2. The present stock of the Mongolian collection c o n s i s t s of 285 i t e m s . T h i s i s , naturally, l e s s than that of the U l a n - B a t o r or L e n i n g r a d collections (about which we have no exact data anyway), or even the Copenhagen collection (with i t s 560 i t e m s ) . (I shall not mention h e r e the 12 G e r m a n collections which c o n t a i n 672 i t e m s . ) But the collection of the L i b r a r y of the Hungarian Academy of S c i e n c e s is l a r g e r than that of the Toyo Bunko (Tokyo) with 230, the Bibliothèque N a t i o n a l e ( P a r i s ) with 165, the East A s i a t i c L i b r a r y (Berkeley, Calif. ) with 133 (my catalogue of this collection is t o a p p e a r in Acta O r i e n t . Hung. 31(1977)) or the B r i t i s h Museum (London) with 105 i t e m s , e t c . (For the r e l e v a n t data see Walther HEISSIG, Catalogue of Mongol Books, M a n u s c r i p t s and X y l o g r a p h s [The Royal L i b r a r y , Copenhagen] , Copenhagen 1971, pp. XIXXX. ) In t e r m s of quantity the M o n golian collection of the L i b r a r y of the Hungarian Academy of S c i e n c e s can be d e -s c r i b e d a -s a m e d i u m - -s i z e d collection.
Mongolian c o l l e c t i o n s cannot be c o m p a r e d however, s i m p l y in t e r m s of s i z e . An evaluation can be m a d e f r o m s e v e r a l points of view, such a s t h e number and p r o p o r t i o n of MSS in each collection. Out of the 285 Mongolian MSS and xylographs in the L i b r a r y of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences 178 a r e MSS (of which 25 a r e O i r a t MSS). The proportion of MSS to printed w o r k s i s , when c o m p a r e d toother m e -d i u m - s i z e -d Mongolian c o l l e c t i o n s containing a l m o s t no MSS, f a i r l y goo-d. For the s c h o l a r t h i s is of i m m e n s e value even if many of the Mongolian M SS a r e f r a g m e n t a r y of d i f f i c u l t to i n t e r p r e t or identify.
3. This brief handlist does not include untitled i t e m s , which number o v e r f i f t y . Around half of the untitled works and the v a r i o u s f r a g m e n t s a r e on Buddhist s u b j e c t s or a r e not at p r e s e n t e a s y to identify. I hope that the planned d e s c r i p t i v e catalogue will be completed in the n e a r f u t u r e , thus making the Mongolian collection of the L i b r a r y of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences a v a i l a b l e in i t s e n t i r e l y , a s a whole, f o r Mongolian s t u d i e s .
II.
On the Manchu books and manuscripts in the Oriental Collection
The 25th a n n i v e r s a r y of the O r i e n t a l Collection p r e s e n t s us with an excellent opportunity to d i s c u s s the r i c h and valuable collection of o r i e n t a l m a n u s c r i p t s in the p o s s e s s i o n of the L i b r a r y of the Hungarian Academy of S c i e n c e s . Somewhat overshadowed by the main body of Hebrew, T u r k i s h , M o n -golian, Arabic and P e r s i a n m a n u s c r i p t s in a quantitatively s m a l l e r c o l l e c t i o n , that of Manchu m a n u s c r i p t s and r a r e b o o k s . It would s e e m to me worthwhile and n e c e s s a r y to take the opportunity of the a n n i v e r s a r y to mention a few w o r d s about t h i s collection, p a r t i c u l a r l y a s its e x i s t e n c e is not g e n e r a l l y known to Manchu s c h o l a r s .
The list of t i t l e s which we publish below is intended to provide p r e -l i m i n a r y i n f o r m a t i o n on the provenance of many we-l-l-known works and a -l s o t o publicize the e x i s t e n c e of a number of hitherto unknown i t e m s . As such it will be of use to Manchu philologist.
The O r i e n t a l Collection at p r e s e n t p o s s e s s e s 36 Manchu i t e m s . T h e r e a r e a f u r t h e r 22 w o r k s in the Mongolian m a n u s c r i p t s and xylographs section which by r i g h t ought to belong in the Manchu collection.
