(2) ÁKOS KISS. ROMAN MOSAICS IN HUNGARY F O N T E S ARC HAEO LOG I C I H U N G ÁR IÁÉ. T h e book presents the mosa i c material of t ha t par t o f Pannónia which is s it uated in H u nga r y, from the point of view of a r cheol ogy, and artistic values, by placing it in the relics of t he Empire. Parallel with this, it offers aspects of t h e deve l opme nt in the style of P an n o n i a n arts. The a u t h o r ex a mi n e s how the e m a n a t i o n f rom the l arge centr es of a r t s affected this a r e a and establishes t ha t Roman mosaic ar t in P a n n ó n i a was b o r n out of a union of N or t h Italian a n d East Syrian ar t trends. In analyzing t he pictorial r epr esentat ions of the P a n n o n i a n mosaics he establishes that in conformity with the military situation of t h e province, the picture t h e me s ar e in o n e way o r a n o t h e r all associated with struggle o r fight, the d r inki ng contest of H e r ac l es and Dionysos, the wrestler s an d the boxers, cl earl y i n t e r d e p e n d e n t on t h e premises for which they wer e p r e p a r e d . The effect of Hellenistic paintings c a n also be felt especially in t h e compositions of genr e a n d still life paintings. The black-and-white deco r a t i o n s of public and military buildings a r e puritanical, colourless, geometric mosaics. An ea r ly Christian bur ial vault a t Pécs r ea di l y proves t h a t mosaic a r t prevailed even after the collapse of t he Roman r u l e in Pannónia. The s i m p l e r individual mosaics w e r e p r e p a r e d locally, others were ma de by travel ling artists. On a few occasions, high quality ma sterpieces coming f r o m far-off places were included later into the g eo m et r ic flooring. The large mosaic of B a l á c a born in the Severian concept of style means t he artistic a c m e of this a r e a ; no s i milar exa mpl e has yet been di sc over ed in t h e Empire..
