E-learning: opportunities and pitfalls in the higher education and in the training

Szász Antónia <szasza@gdfhu>

Gábor Dénes Főiskola

In my presentation, I would like to introduce the opportunities in e-learning and in blended learning, and the prerequisites o f their exploitation. Furthermore, I will speak about pitfalls and problems coming up during the switch to the new system and the ways to eliminate them.

These cover the personal, institutional, information-technological, didactic and attitudinal aspects. Instead of the plain overview of the theories and experiences found in literature, I will review the services of a concrete e-leaming framework system, ILIAS, focusing on practices and problems, also the challenges of the new learning environment - equally from users’ and service providers’ side. In connection with switching to the new methodology and harmonizing the working of the system on institution-level, I will demonstrate the new task of mentors and tutors. I will also show the necessity of their training, based on several years of experience in mentoring and tutoring at Dennis Gabor College.

Telecentres, as Part of an E-Learning Network in the Carpathian Basin

Partiumi Keresztény Egyetem - Nagyvárad

This paper outlines the starting premises of a research program recently launched by the author, which aims to assess the profile of Romanian telecentre-networks, their degree of connection, characteristics, strategies and possibilities, and the role they could play in establishing a new e-leaming network in the Carpathian Basin, and the new European informational landscape.

Although the number of image databases has spectacularly increased in the past years, this quantitative growth did not bring along the appearance and spread of generally accepted convention or software tools that allow the managing o f our image materials. With the present tools the problem of managing digital images can be primarily solved by reflection to the

verbal conceptual level. Although by this dimension decrease we lose the most typical property of the images, their being as an image, the textual information assigned to images gives us some chance for content-based storage, maintenance and thus retrieval.

Towards this, we have to define principle criteria and practical standards for the method of visual information and data extraction, for the arrangement of data and information arose on different levels into standardised ontologies, for the spatial and temporal systematisation of the extracted information and data, for the creation of searchable metadata. The development o f general software solutions can provide simple tools in the future for solving our technical problems, for easy use o f visual elements and for setting up public libraries both for teachers and students.

In the first part of this presentation, authors would like to give a brief overview about the status of higher-education and research collaboration services (videoconference and Video on Demand portal) offered by the NIIF Program, describing the major developments and events o f the past year.

Furthermore, the presentation reports about the prospective developments of the forthcoming few years, supported by particular Operative Programs o f the New Hungary Development Plan. While improvement and development of the higher-education and research videoconference infrastructure and its related services will be covered by TIOP 1.3.2 program, establishment o f a modem collaboration videoportal in support of higher-education and research demands will be sponsored by TAMOP 4.1.5. The presentation details the technical background of planned developments and the methodology and timeline of implementation.

The Use of e-Learning as an Academic Requirement in the M.A. Level Teacher Training Programs

Due to the implementation of the Bologna process teacher training programs have changed significantly. Consequently, the acquisition of competences promoting effective teaching, especially the use of modem information and communication technology devices, has gained additional importance. My lecture aims to introduce content knowledge facilitating effective and successful use of ICT during one’s private life and during the fulfilment of his or her professional responsibilities.

Our lecture explores three key areas:

1. The information and communication technology foundations of the teaching profession

2. Electronic learning environments

3. The use o f knowledge bases for pedagogical purposes

The concept o f e-leaming can be defined in several different ways. It might be useful to consider e-leaming as a composite system, which has the following elements: computer based learning, web-based learning and distance education. Each subsystem has some special key- characteristics. Setting out from this assumption, we can elaborate a definition which is design and evaluation oriented. The new dimension is made up primarily of the virtually endless information basis for learning, the possibility of computerised telecommunication, and the computerised integration of the whole learning process. E-leaming's main characteristics are the systemic approach in the efficient organisation of the entire learning process, the didactic design and the modularity in the shaping o f the structure of learning materials.
