Application for the Hungarian State Health Insurance (TAJ)
EEA citizens residing in Hungary for longer than one year and do not have a valid European Health Insurance Card
Please follow the steps listed below. Do not forget to keep your valid registration card, address card and passport/EU ID card with you all time when you visit the Hungarian Authorities.
1. Request an E104 form from your home country which confirms that you are not enrolled in your home country’s state health insurance system. If you are already in Hungary, you can request the form through the Hungarian system at the National Institute of Health Insurance Fund (NEAK).
2. Once you have obtained the E104 form, proceed to the NEAK Office to have you Hungarian social security number (“TAJ szám”) generated on the spot.

3. Fill out an application form with the help of the Student Center (Nador 11, III Floor, Room 304) and have your registration card, address card and passport/national ID cards copied to start the enrollment process in the Hungarian State Health Insurance System. The payment of the monthly health insurance fee will be undertaken by the university.
4. In a month from your check-in date your registration to the Hungarian State Health Insurance System will be successfully proceeded and your TAJ will be activated. You will receive a notification about it from the Student Center.
5. In order to get your TAJ card and European Health Insurance Card, you will need to visit the NEAK office again. The cards will be issued on the spot, free of charge.
6. Some months later you will receive an official letter in a registered mail from the Hungarian Taxation Office (NAV) to your address in Hungary. This authority acts on behalf of NEAK in terms of administration and it informs about the registration of your application. Along with the letter you might receive yellow postal checks in the envelope: do not pay them.
Please note that registering in the Hungarian State Health Insurance System is required by law for EU citizens.
Non-compliance will result in the termination of student enrollment.
