PRIMARY SCHOOL (VOLKSSCHULE)

• Age 6-10

• A four-year school, grades 1-4

• Option to attend the pre-school year (if child is old enough but not yet ready to attend)

• Commencing on 1 September after the child's sixth birthday Early admission is possible if the child is ready for school.

• Registration at the school as a pupil is a pre-condition for admission.

• Upon completion: Progress into the next stage of education 2 All children resident in Austria are required to attend school. They are required to attend school from the first day of September following their sixth birthday. Compulsory education lasts nine years.

Registration

Children reaching the age of 6 prior to 31 August of a given year are required to attend school from 1 September of that year and must go to school. Parents with children of compulsory school age receive a letter from the Vienna School Board requesting them to have their children registered at the school nearest to their place of residence. Should they wish to send the child to a different location the school inspector of the relevant district will decide on your child's acceptance. This applies to publicly maintained schools only. Admission to primary school will take place following registration. In order to register a child for school, documents from kindergarten are required. The allocation of a spot occurs through the school or the responsible Regional Education Board. For registration at a private school it is recommended that you contact the relevant principal. When registering their child, parents must take the child along with them, so that the head teacher can determine whether the child is ready to attend school. The school psychology service can be contacted for support during the decision process.

Students with Mother Tongues other than German

Special emphasis is put on the language teaching of these students. Teaching takes place in regular classes by way of integration, taking into account students' individual needs, just as on an

extracurricular basis. Children are given the opportunity to attend remedial classes to improve their command of German; special tutors attend to students with little knowledge of German.

The next step Upon successful completion of Year 4 of the primary school, pupils must attend one of the following types of school:

• The New Secondary School, or

• The Lower Level of the Academic Secondary School

The requirement on admission is that the child has attended Year 4 of the Primary School or the corresponding year group of a Special School.
