Obwohl s i e beide V e r t r e t e r d e r u n g a r i s c h e n L i t e r a t u r von w e l t l i t e r a r i s c h e m Rang s i n d , ist im Ausland f a s t nur P e t ő f i - a l s unser g r ö s s t e r P o e t - b e k a n n t . Arany ist n u r w e n i g b e k a n n t - e i n e r s e i t s weil ein g r o s s e r T e i l s e i n e r W e r k e s p i s c h e n C h a r a k t e r t r a g t , a n d e r e r s e i t s , weil s i e wegen ihres e c h t u n g a r i s c h e n S p r a c h g e b -r a u c h s s c h w e -r zu ü b e -r s e t z e n s i n d .

Dabei s p i e l t e d i e Tatigkeit d e s b e g e i s t e r t e n L a n d s m a n n e s und Z e i t g e n o s s e n K a r l Kertbeny ( u r s p r ü n g l i c h : Karl B e n k e r t , 1824-1884) d i e g r o s s e R o l l e . Die F a m i l i e von Kertbeny k a m aus Wien n a c h P e s t . E r k a n n t e die u n g a r i s c h e Sprache, a b e r e r konnte s i e s i c h nicht v o l l k o m m e n aneignen. E r begann s e i n e L a u f b a h n in d e r Buchhandlung von H e c k e n a s t und l e r n t e d o r t P e t ő f i k e n n e n . Da K e r t b e n y oft ins A u s l a n d f u h r , nahm e r auch Heine P e t ő f i s Dichtungen m i t . Heine r i e f a u s : "Ach, e r i s t e i n g r o s s e r D i c h t e r , w i r B u r n s o d e r B é r a n g e r " , K e r t b e n y lebte von 1846 J a h r e h i n d u r c h im A u s l a n d . Although they both w e r e c u l t i v a t o r s of Hungarian l i t e r a t u r e m a t c h i n g t h e s t a n d a r d s of world l i t e r a t u r e , it is only P e t ő f i that is known a b r o a d a s our g r e a t e s t l y r i c i s t . A r a n y is l e s s known — s i n c e a m a j o r p a r t of h i s w o r k s i s e p i c and b e -s i d e -s , owing t o hi-s u -s e of indigenou-s H u n g a r i a n p a r l a n c e , h i -s w o r k -s a r e not e a -s i l y r e n d e r e d into a foreign l a n g u a g e .
B o t h poets d e s e r v e c r e d i t f o r t h e i r a c h i e v e m e n t in t r a n s l a t i n g English l i -t e r a -t u r e in-to H u n g a r i a n . T o g e -t h e r wi-th MIHÁLY VÖRÖSMARTHY (1800-1855) -t h e t h r e e p o e t s s t a r t e d t o launch the H u n g a r i a n edition of S h a k e s p e a r e ' s c o m p l e t e w o r k s . P e t ő f i ' s t r a n s l a t i o n of " C o r i o l a n u s " was p u b l i s h e d , but the W a r of I n d e p e n dence in 184849 s u s p e n d e d t h i s i n i t i a t i v e . As P e t ő f i fell v i c t i m t o t h e W a r of I n -d e p e n -d e n c e t h e t r a n s l a t i o n of S h a k e s p e a r e was c a r r i e -d on by h i s b e s t f r i e n -d , J á n o s A r a n y , When s t i l l a s t u d e n t in D e b r e c e n A r a n y had been e n c o u r a g e d by one of h i s t e a c h e r s : " Y o u should t r a n s l a t e nobody but S h a k e s p e a r e , D o m i n e ! P e t ő f i h a i l e d h i m in a p o e m , though they w e r e not yet a c q u a i n t e d . F r o m that t i m e on, h o w e v e r , they had c o r r e s p o n d e n c e with e a c h o t h e r . B e c a u s e of h i s epic w o r k s h e w a s c a l l e d t h e
" H u n g a r i a n H o m e r " . He b o r r o w e d the s u b j e c t of his d r a m a t i c b a l l a d s f r o m Hungarian f o l k l o r e and h i s t o r y . I m p r e s s e d a l s o by Scottish f o l k - b a l l a d s , h e t r a n s l a t e d " S i r P a t r i c k S p e n s " . A f t e r t h e s u p p r e s s i o n of t h e W a r of Independence h e w r o t e a b a l l a d titled " T h e B a r d s of W a l e s " to get round c e n s o r s h i p , he f i r s t published a s a "Scottish f o l k - b a l l a d " . In 1873 when he was a l r e a d y s e c r e t a r y - g e n e r a l of the H u n g a r i a n Academy of S c i e n c e s , t h e P r i n c e of W a l e s , the w o u l d - b e king Edward II v i s i t e d B u d a p e s t and was guided by A r a n y in t h e Hall of the A c a d e m y . According t o t h e r e p o r t in T h e ' T i m e s , t h e P r i n c e of W a l e s a s k e d t h e poet when h e had w r i t t e n " T h e B a r d s of W a l e s " . A r a n y a n s w e r e d : "In a t i m e when t h e H u n g a r i a n nation, j u s t l i k e the Welsh b a r d s in the b a l l a d , r e f u s e d to p r a i s e h e r o p p r e s s o r s . "

As a w r i t e r and e d i t o r and l a t e r t h e s e c r e t a r y - g e n e r a l , h e did much to p r o m o t e English l i t e r a t u r e in H u n g a r y and to extend E n g l i s h - H u n g a r i a n s c i e n t i f i c c o n n e c t i o n s . He l e a r n e d E n g l i s h and could t r a n s l a t e t h e p l a y s : "A M i d s u m m e r N i g h ' s D r e a m " , " T h e l i f e and d e a t h of King J o h n " and " H a m l e t " f r o m t h e o r i g i n a l . In 1864 the B u d a p e s t National T h e a t e r c e l e b r a t e d t h e 300th a n n i v e r s a r y of S h a k e s p e a r e ' s b i r t h by p r e s e n t i n g "A M i d s u m m e r N i g h t ' s D r e a m " . T h e s e p l a y s a r e being p e r f o r m e d in A r a n y ' s v e r s i o n even t o d a y . F r a g m e n t s of h i s t r a n s l a t i o n s f r o m "Macbeth" and " R o m e o and J u l i e t " have s u r v i v e d . A r a n y r e a d m u c h of B y r o n , w h o s e works could b e found in h i s l i b r a r y , h e a l s o t r a n s l a t e d p a r t s of "Don J u a n " . T h e son of J á n o s A r a n y , L á s z l ó A r a n y (1844-1898), a l s o a p o e t , t u r n e d t o w a r d s England and its l i t e r a t u r e with g r e a t i n t e r e s t . He v i s i t e d England and had s i g n i f i c a n t E n g l i s h c o n n e c t i o n s , but the document s of t h e s e f a c t s w e r e d e s t r o y e d in World W a r n . It is p o s s i b l e t h a t r e l e v a n t l e t t e r s , d o c u m e n t s m a y e m e r g e in the f u t u r e in E n g l a n d . An e a r l i e r l i s t of the w o r k s of J á n o s A r a n y t r a n s l a t e d into English and o t h e r l a n g u a g e s w e r e c o m p i l e d by F r i g y e s L á m and G é z a Voinovich. Sebbene e n t r a m b i a b b i a n o eoltivato la l e t t e r a t u r a ad un livello che Ii pone f r a i g r a n d i di tutto il m o n d o , a l l ' E s t e r o s i c o n o s c e p r a t i c a m e n t e solo P e t ő f i - c o m e il n o s t r o m a g g i o r e poéta l i r i c o . La c o n o s c e n z a c h e del latino aveva fin dell i n f a n z i a , o l t r e all i n t e r e s s e che egli p r o v a v a p e r le o p e r e e p i c h e della l e t t e r a t u r a m o n d i a l e , c o n d u s s e r o A r a n y v e r s o la l e t t e r a t u r a i t a l i a n a . Egli conobbe le o p e r e di Dante, A r i o s t o e T a s s o , d a p p r i m a in t r a d u z i o n e t e d e s c a ; m a p o i , giá nel 1856, egli s c r i v e v a al suo amico: " L e g g o Dante ed A r i o s t o in i t a l i a n o . " T r a d u s s e anche b r a n i dell O r l a n d o F u r i o s o e del poema epico di T o r q u a t o T a s s o " L a G e r u s a l e m m e L i b e r a t a " . G r a z i e alia sua p o l t r o n a a c c a -d e m i c a , egli fece f r u t t i f i c a r e lo stu-dio c h e aveva con-dotto s u l T a s s o .
