LIBRARIES, ARCHIVES, MUSEUMS, CONTENT PROVIDERS

2. Main functions and subsystems Data Warehouse

Helped by meta-search engine, it assures simultaneous access to 8 library’s databases from one portal point.

Knowledge Web

Its role is to indicate relations between entities (articles, authors, container reviews, publishers, keywords, topics, etc.) that are included in 8 integrated library’s databases.

Knowledge Warehouse

Its primary role is to archive articles edited by BUTE NTICL in various publications. Its secondary role is to contain different Knowledge Bases.

Archive-Browser makes possible to see the content of the archive in several ways.

Knowledge Bases can be discovered by many navigation strategies.

Digital Gene Engine

It makes possible to select, order and reuse documents’ content in the archives.

This is useful in creating new knowledge products, theses, textbooks, hyperbooks, knowledge repositories, diploma-works, exercise books, etc.

About the Hungarian Hand Press Book Database (MOKKA-R) project

In September 2003, the plans for a Hungarian Hand Press Book Database were outlined. In this presentation I am going to talk about the achievements we have made since.

Our first step was to acquire data through a nation-wide survey on how the participation in a central computer-based information system can be organised. Based on this survey we were able to assess what kind of bibliographical descriptions exist of books printed before 1850 as well as to what extent computer technology has been made use of (such as MARC formats, digital archiving, etc.

Records are kept in XML format. A search screen belongs to the database as well as a data-entry sheet. Records can be entered and updated through the data entry sheet.

Access to this is also Internet based.

We have no plans as of yet how each member library will transfer their own computerised data to the shared catalogue. This is to be decided after the testing period.

The database will actually come into existence only after - based on the feasibility study - the co-operation between the collections starts to develop.

The aim of the National Digital Data Archives (NDA) is to provide and widen access to national cultural assets in digital format over computer networks. An important tool to reach this goal is the establishment of unified services offering overview, search, browse and other facilities for the collection of digitised assets. NDA puts emphasis on self-organisation and co-operation of communities in the development of this campaign.

In terms of these ideas, the Department of Distributed Systems of MTA SZTAKI voluntarily participated in developments connected to NDA: we established a unified service for digitised items with various search and browse facilities. This service has collected more than 450000 metadata records up to now, describing books, e-texts, and images as well as audio and video material. We have also helped several institutes to connect to NDA and to make their metadata available for the archive. Our results and experiences are detailed in this paper.

Using Topic Map on Internet

“Information Competence”, which is connected to the name of Dannenberg and the others plays a main role to achieve information society and it is very important to Internet users trying to find their way in the ocean of information which overrun us.

According to surveys of Spanish and American magazines 60-70% of articles analyse the problem of information retrieval.

First of all the problem is that only a fragment of the users have “habit of mind intemaut.”

To make searching easier there are dozens of different search engines on the market.

The lecture introduces one of these brand new visual search engines GROKKER which aims breaking the autocracy of Google. GROKKER appeared on the market on 30*h April 2004 and it has several functions to raise it to the head of search engines even among “Topic Map” search engines.

Technically this system is able to survey information which can be found on deep/hidden web.

The lecture about GROKKER is ended by some comparisons to other visual searchers to illustrate its ability “Know more.”

The whole management system of The Library Supply Distribution Co. (KELLŐ) has been modernised in the second half of year 2004.

The two major achievements are:

• The bibliographic database of KELLŐ has been migrated into the HunTéka Library System

• Introduction of SAP

The integration of HunTéka and SAP was a great challenge for all of us. We were able comply with the new requirements, so as a result the KELLŐ has a new website with many new high-level services since lsth of December 2004.

The paper consists of three units, concerning the problems of the migration, the new services of KELLŐ and the integration of the system of KELLŐ with the SAP.

The data were not only migrated but standardised, too. The HunTéka software customised concerning to the demands of KELLŐ, and using a consolidated database makes possible to provide checked and correct data. The WEB-based interface of the SAP makes possible to display the bibliographic items with linked URL addresses, full-text data, pictures, and sound records, corresponding to the modem claims of the customers.

In addition to the customisation of the user interface, several kinds of special outputs were made, concerning the format and content options specified by KELLŐ, like prepared data for “Új könyvek” referring journal, order item reports, catalogue cards, etc.

The data of the customers, goods, storehouses, order items, invoices, and sells are recorded in the new SAP R/3 integrated system since the January of 2004.

The integration of SAP and the cataloguing of the documents (books, CD-ROMs, CD- s, MC-s, DVD-s, and VHS-s) was solved by migrating to HunTéka. The requests coming from the SAP (search and browse units, HUNMARC and USMARC data load) are accepted by the XML based protocol of HunTéka and the results are also provided using this interface.

The Békés County Library founded the bases of its electric library in the scope of the IHM-ITP-8 application. The aim of the project was to establish a data bank similar to the original documents by digitising them. During the software purchasing, processing and developing the electronic library we have made an effort to make our database able to be connected to similar ones all over Hungary. According to the digitising concept, the first digitised documents were about local history. Either of them was a historical monograph, one of them is a volume that contains records written in Latin language, the other documents are the three volumes (1874-76) of a periodical of Békés county (Békésmegyei Közlöny), which were only accessible in the form of microfilms for the researchers and visitors before. The planning and processing took place with the lead and help of outside experts. The main guideline was to uphold of the original format while making text-based searching possible. For the sake of the cause we made visual representations beside the text format. When we digitised the books we preferred to present the pages of them; at the periodicals, we presented the articles. For structuring and storing the text in XML format we applied the JaDoX document manager system. On a well-formed online interface the Monguz frame system provides the queries and different search methods and the appearances.

Through these systems (which are the modules of the integrated HunTéka library system) our electric library can be enlarged easily, moreover, our collection can be integrated or connected to other collections or data banks in the country.
