THE MESSENGER Newsletter of the Kossuth Club August-September 2008. Vol. 14. No. 8-9

Hungarian Christmas Bazaar. We will have a Hungarian Christmas Bazaar and Bake Sale on Saturday, November 15 at the Beneva Christian Church (4835 Beneva Road, Sarasota). We would like to receive donated items of Hungarian folk art in new or used but good condition (embroidery, woodcarvings, ceramic or porcelain knick-knacks, etc.) that would be of interest to the American public to buy and give as Christmas gifts.

Proceeds will benefit the Kossuth Club scholarship fund. Please contact members of the Bazaar Committee (Erika Thiringer, President, 923-1444, Orsi Nádasdy, 926-7876, Judith Posch, 929-9856, or Nóra Szonntágh, 708-6699) if you have anything to donate for the sale, or if you can help in any way, such as pricing merchandise, or help at the sale.

Susan Deák will be in charge of the bake sale; she will contact prospective hostesses in October.

Hungarian Schools In Transylvania. More than one hundred students received scholarships from the Kossuth Club at the end of the 2007-2008 school year in Csíkszereda and Nagyvárad. The superintendents of both schools thanked our members for our help and sent signed affidavits as well as pictures from the recipients.

Gifts from the Névai Foundation. In July the Névai Foundation donated a total of

$44,000.00 to the Kossuth Club to be distributed as follows: $36,000.00 to Brother Csaba Böjte for the children in Transylvania and Hungary, $5,000.00 to the Nyírmada- Beregszász Foundation for the people in Kárpátalja, and $3,000.00 for the Kossuth Club.

Music Notes. On Friday, January 30 2009 the Budapest Festival Orchestra under the baton of Ivan Fischer presents a concert in the Van Wezel Hall. A limited number of tickets will be available at $50, 56 and 60 through the Kossuth Club until September 10.

Please order your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

September Program. On Thursday, September 25 at 4:30 PM in the Selby Library (1331 First Street, Sarasota) there will be a memorial program and concert remembering the victims of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Fifty years ago this year the reprisal by the re-established communist regime culminated with the execution of more than 3000 people. Dr. Árpád Brusznyai, a professor of Greek and Latin languages and the president of the revolutionary committee in the provincial town of Veszprém was one of the victims. Pál Fekete and Dr. Jenő Szonntágh present the program. Our guest is clarinetist Benny Yangco.
