Megköszönöm Rafael Salas úr szavait. amelyekkel nemcsak értékelte az EGB Regionális Népesedési és Fejlődési Értekezletének most befejeződött munkáját. ha- nem jó elemzését is adta az EGB—régió demográfiai helyzetének. Emellett még ösz- szefoglalást hallhattunk az UNFPA tevékenysé géről, arról a fontos segítségről". ame- lyet a szervezet nyújt a fejlődő országoknak a népesedés és fejlődés területén.

Meg kívánom ismételni azt a kijelentését, hogy 1987 fontos dátumot jelent a világnépesség növekedésében. A világ népessége ebben az évben éri el az 5 mil- liárd főt. Csatlakozunk a kezdeményezéshez. hogy július 11-ét ,,Az 5 milliárd nap—

jának" nevezzük el. Reméljük, hogy a világ-, a regionális és a nemzeti népesség- fejlődésről régiónkban különböző formákban meg fognak emlékezni.

Értekezletünk végéhez érkezve nem kívánok részletes elemzést adni az itt vég—

zett közös munkáról. Az elfogadott jegyzőkönyv jól tükrözi azokat a közös eszméket.

amelyeket együtt alakítottunk ki. Ebben a jegyzőkönyvben egyértelműen értékeljük a régió népesedési trendjeit és azokat a gondokat, amelyeket az alacsony termé- kenység és a népesség elöregedése okoz. Sok új megállapítás hangzott el a to—

nócskozáson a népesedési kérdéseknek a gazdasági és társadalmi fejlődésre gya—

korolt következményeiről.

A korábbinál részletesebb képet kaptunk azokról a népesedéspolitikaí intéz- kedésekről, amelyekkel a régió egyre több országa válaszol a népesedés kihívá- sára. További lépéseket kell tenni az együttműködés irányába ezen a területen, és különösképpen a politikai intézkedések hatékonyságának elemzése az a terület.

A népesedés kutatása egyre elmélyültebbé válik régiónk országaiban.

Több beszámoló hangzott el a kutatás összehangolásáról, főként a demográ- fiai elemzések magas szintjén. amelyet az EGB Titkársága szervez. de azokról a kétoldalú összehasonlitásokról is, amelyeket egyes országok szakemberei végeztek néhány fontos területen. Hasonlóképpen hasznosak a jövőbeni regionális együtt- működésre tettrjavaslatok, amelyeket a jegyzőkönyv mint ajánlásokat tartalmaz. Az együttműködés területén a különböző nem kormányzati szervek által kifejtett tevé-

kenység ugyancsak jelentős.

Végül sokra értékelendő az EGB-országoknak a fejlődő országok demográfiai problémái megoldásában játszott szerepéről folytatott véleménycsere. Ezen a terü- leten az UNFPA szerepe a jövőben még növekedni fog. és az európai országok folyamatosan növekvő mértékben járulnak hozzá az együttműködéshez.

Ez a regionális tanácskozás megmutatta. hogy vannak még vitatandó témáink

a népesedés területén. Sajátos problémáinkban és azok megoldási módjaiban sok

Végezetül köszönetet kell mondanom a tanácskozás szervezőinek — az EGB és az UNFPA vezetőinek — kezdeményezésükért, a Titkárságnak hatékony munkájáért.

l thank Mr. Rafael Salas for his address in which he not only evaluated the just finish- ed work of the ECE Regional Meeting on Population and Development but also presented an excellent analysis of the demogrophic situation of the ECE Region. Besides. we could

also hear a summary of the activities of UNFPA, of the important assistance it gives to

developing countries in the field of population and development.

! want to reiterote his statement that 1987 represents an important date in the pop-

ulation development of the world. lt is this year that the number of the world population reaches 5 billion people. We join the initiative to designate the ch ot July ,.The day of live billion". We hope that throughout our region the world. the regional and the national developments of population will be marked in different forms.

Arriving at the end of our Meeting l do not intend to give a detailed analysis of the joint work performed here. The Report adopted this morning reflects well those common thoughts which we have shaped together. ln this Report we evaluate unambiguously the population trends of the Region and those concerns which are caused by law fertility and the aging of the population. Many new statements have been made at the Meeting re—

garding the subject of the implications of population issues for economic and social devel-

opment.

We have received a picture, which is more detailed than before, about those population policy measures with which a continuously growing number of the countries of the Region

answer population chan'enges. It is necessary to make further steps towards co-operation in this field and it is especially the analysis of the efficiency of the policy measures where we have to reach more results.

Population research is deepening more and more in the countries of our Region.

Several reports were presented on the coordinotion of research activities, especially

on the high level of demographic analyses organized by the ECE Secretariat but also on

those bilateral comporisons which were performed by the research workers of certain countries concerning some important subjects. Similarly useful are the proposals which were

presented with regard to regional future co—operation and have been included in the Report as recommendations. In the field of co—operation the activities being carried on by various non-governmental organizations are also significant.

Finally, the exchange of views concerning the role of the ECE countries on solving the demogrophic problems of developing countries was highly valuable. In this field the role of UNFPA will still increase in the future and the contribution of the European countries

to the co-operation is continuously growing.

This Regional Meeting has shown that we have subjects to discuss in the field of pop- ulation. Our special problems and the ways of their solution reveal many common features.

Therefore we have to increase our efforts in the future and the role of ECE should be stength- ened in this field. Regional meetings similar to the present one, serving for the deeper

discussion of certain subjects will be necessary also in the future.

Finally, l should like to thank the organizers of the Meeting — the leaders of ECE and

UNFPA — for their initiative, the secretariat for their efficient work, the interpreters and

tronslators for their unselfish perfomonce and all of the staff of the Budapest Convention Center for their contribution to the successful conclusion of our Meeting by having created a suitable environmental and smooth facilities for it.
