GAIN A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

Based in Vienna, Central European University brings together students and faculty from over 100 countries in a close-knit community that fosters dialog and collaboration across borders, cultures and disciplines.

Combining the best of American and European academic traditions, CEU is accredited in the United States and Austria and is internationally renowned for academic excellence. It offers English-language degree programs in the social sciences, humanities, busi- ness, economics, law, environmental sciences and policy, network science and cognitive science. A deeply inter- disciplinary approach pervades all

aspects of learning and research, with real-life applications at the forefront.

A young, dynamic university, CEU recently celebrated its 30th anniver- sary this year. Established in 1991 as a regional academic center, the uni- versity set out to prepare future lead- ers and innovators to seek solutions for the complex problems of our world, in the spirit of supporting open and democratic societies. And while the university has grown into a truly global institution, its mission has remained the same – and it is just as relevant today as it was three decades ago.

We are CEU. Come join us.

STUDY YOUR PASSION

At CEU, our diverse student body is our most important asset. We nurture a student-oriented academic culture, drawing on the wealth of knowledge and perspectives that our multicultur- al, multinational community provides.

A 7:1 student/faculty ratio ensures a dynamic environment for collabora- tion and debate. Our faculty, hailing from around the world, work closely with every student to help develop their critical thinking skills and explore their individual research interests.

CEU has earned global recognition for a range of programs, including political science and international relations, phi- losophy, history, legal studies, business and economics. Our work in emerging fields such as cognitive science and network and data science is also renowned internationally.

We run four two-year Erasmus Mun- dus master’s programs in partnership with leading European institutions: in public policy; history; environmental sciences, policy and management;

and gender studies. Highly competi- tive, these programs provide generous scholarships to top international students and foster intellectual coop- eration and research in Europe.

As a young and flexible institution, CEU enables and encourages faculty and students to reach across disciplines to address the complex social and political issues of the 21st century, including bioethics and corporate responsibility, climate change and environmental security, media freedom and data pri- vacy, gentrification and urbanization, minority- and gender-rights policies, terrorism and human security.

“The coursework at the Department of Legal Studies is extremely interesting, and it simulates real-life situations in the field. For instance, in one class, we had to draft a bill of rights of an imaginary constitution; in another one, we had to simulate working at an international NGO and present an advocacy proposal before the UN Human Rights Council. Classes are never boring.

There are also research opportunities and travel grants available to students specializing in a particular area.”

FALL FOR VIENNA

Consistently ranked among the world’s most livable cities, Vienna offers an intriguing blend of modern urban life and Central European tradition. It is a place where quirky student hangouts sit alongside opulent coffee houses, and modern art fills centuries-old palaces.

And where Mozart composed The Mar- riage of Figaro, Klimt painted The Kiss, and Freud wrote most of his works on psychoanalysis.

Leafy parks and riverside beaches, world- class galleries and museums, beer gar- dens and vineyards, street fairs and culinary fests offer entertainment from spring to fall, while the Austrian capital’s squares transform into a snowy, glitter- ing playground with Christmas markets and ice rinks in winter. A real melting

pot of cultures, Vienna offers a multi- cultural calendar of festivals that cele- brate food, traditions and music from all around the world.

Outstanding public transport and a sprawling network of cycle paths mean that most of the city is accessible within 30 minutes. Less than 100 kilometers from Vienna, the Alps beckon with hiking and biking trails in warmer months and skiing and snowshoeing opportunities in winter. Vienna is also ideal for those who wish to travel further afield: much of Eastern Europe, Northern Italy and Southern Germany are within a few hours’ train journey, while Vienna Airport connects to over 200 destina- tions across the globe.

“Vienna is a calm, clean and safe city. It is a great place to live and study with modern infra- structure, loads of interesting museums, a wide variety of food and restaurants, plus student discounts on public transport. And it is so easy to move around the city no matter where you are.

But what makes Vienna really special for me are its environmental initiatives and promotion of healthy lifestyle. The city is full of parks and outdoor spaces where you can enjoy nature, exercise and have fun. My favorite area is near the Danube, it is very beautiful and peaceful.’’

CEU’s Vienna campus is located in Favoriten, the Austrian capital’s mul- ticultural 10th district and one of the city’s most diverse locales. It is easily accessible from across the city and beyond, with tram stops and railway and underground stations nearby.

Creating a collaborative working and learning environment has been at the core of CEU’s vision. Following a mul- timillion-euro campus refurbishment project, each classroom is equipped with smart-boards as well as micro- phones and cameras that enable video conferencing with just a few taps.

A 200-seat auditorium and a tiered classroom have been created for high-profile lectures and large events.

Outside classroom hours, you will have access to learning and social spaces, including a library, computer and PhD labs, lounges and a cafe. The library of- fers a wide range of services to support learning and research, from electronic and print resources to computer work- stations and bookable collaboration rooms. It also hosts state-of-the-art multimedia facilities, including media production and audio labs.
