IN TÓTKOMLÓS (2014-2017)

Brigitta ZSÓTÉR József GÁL Marcell KISDEÁK

Abstract: We asked the population o f Tótkomlós, a small town in the South East o f the Great Plain, how much they are satisfied with the investments implemented in their town (2014-2017). These investments were tlm following: building energetic development o f Jankó János Elementar}

School and Secondary Grammar School, development o f the Slovak Country House, developments to increase public safety implemented by the local government, construction o f the ambulance station. We applied a questionnaire survey which we then assessed with the SPSS program, h turned out o f the repliers' opinion that basically, they are satisfied win these investments but they added as a criticism, fo r example, that beautifying and developing the city should be started from the basics, sm as asphalting the roads. The modernization o f the roads would be a haw necessity then the direction could be taken towards the more fund, projects, o f course, not postponing the application possibilities.

to Békés county. Investm ents o f such kind are: building energetic development o f Jankó János Elementary School and Secondary G ram m ar School, developm ent o f the Slovak Country House, developm ents of t i e local government to im prove public safety, construction ol the am bulance station in Tótkomlós. O f course, these investm ents have been made according to the prevailing tax rules (Lenghel R. D., M iculescu M., 2016) and their budget has been carefully prepared in advance (M iculescu C, Miculescu M., 2012).

We think that the result o f this research w ould be an im portant feedback, w hether those investments were carried out that the population really needed.

W e tried to show w hat proportion o f the population is satisfied with the investments. In our research w e applied the questionnaire survey and we examined the follow ing hypotheses:

1. W e assum ed that the respondents' satisfaction w ith the investm ents m ade since 2014 has increased in connection with health care, education, cityscape, public safety and cultural opportunities, but has deteriorated in tenus o f leisure time and entertainm ent.

2. W e think that according to the majority o f respondents the level of education and public safety have increased in the town.

3. W e assum ed that from the investments m ade in the past few years the am bulance station and the developm ent o f the school had a positive effect on the life o f the population, the country house and the surveillance system a neutral one, w hile there has been no change in the living standards o f the youth and the m iddle-aged living here, the ones o f the older generation have im proved.

4. W e think that according to most o f the answ erers these investm ents remain sustainable in the long term, and the youth, the m iddle-aged and the elderly are all sim ilarly satisfied w ith the tow n developing work o f the local government.

We would like to prove or reject the above-m entioned assum ptions w ith the study.

2. MATERIAL AND METHOD

W e conducted a questionnaire survey. O f course, after the compilation o f the questions we carried out a test questioning. W e also used protocol analysis during the trial, which m eans that w e asked the respondents to "think aloud" and to give their opinion on the questionnaire, so we got a lot o f constructional criticism. A fter that, we finalized the

that there is no significant difference in this sense (educational level, significance = 0,246>0,05; generations: significance = 0,36>0,05).

A lso, the second part o f the hypothesis has been p r o v e d , as most o f the respondents (64%) think that the public safety has increased as a result o f the investments in the town.

We were interested in whether there is a correlation between the educational level, sex, age groups and this question. A s a result, w e could not see any significant difference, (educational level: significance = 0,182>0,05; sexes: significance = 0,174>0,05; age groups: 0,818>0,05).

Consequently, judgement o f this issue does not depend on the educational level, sex or the age o f the respondent.

The first part o f the hypothesis has been p ro v e n , as it is absolutely clear that the ambulance station and the development in the school had a very positive or a positive effect on the life o f people living in this town.

However, the surveillance system and renovation o f the country house had a neutral effect on their life.

In the significance study we can see that there is a significant difference between the changes in the standard o f living and the opinion o f the age groups (significance = 0,00<0,05). The living standards ot the middle-aged have changed positively much more than the ones o f the younger or the older generations. While the standards o f living o f the young and the elderly did not change at all, though it did not change for most o f the middle-aged either, there are a lot o f positive answers in this age group.

It is interesting that the living standards o f the young did not change at all into a negative direction. That is why we rejec ted the hypothesis since there was no change in the standards o f living o f the elderly and the young, while there was a positive one in case o f the middle-aged.

4. We think that acco rd in g to m ost o f the answ erers these in vestm en ts rem ain su sta in a b le in the long term, a n d the yo u th , the m id d le- ag ed a n d the elderly are all sim ila rly sa tisfie d w ith the tow n d eveloping w ork o f the lo ca l governm ent.

Ц , average satisfaction o f the young has a value o f 3,12 (on a scale ol fi .:

grades), that o f the middle-aged is 3,15 and finally, that of the elderly 3,04, so it can be said that each age group evaluates the town develop::

work o f the local government as „medium”. It is interesting that the your, did not choose the option „very good”, w hile the middle-aged and the elderly opted for each possibility. All in all, the hypothesis has been p ro w ;

4. SUMMARY

At the end o f our research, we would make suggestions based on ' opinions o f the respondents to create a better and livable city. First arc foremost, it should be noted that the urban development policy' o f Tótkor:

(as well as many other settlements) is heavily dependent on grants reçu , from applications, especially from the European Union. This means instead of developing what would be necessary, they implement invest

or which they obtained grants through applications. W e think that the government o f the town o f Tótkomlós should have regard for what a p p L tio n s oefy nC0Uld T ? ke the t0Wn liv a b le > m o re developed.

station needs to be upgraded as well. It would be important to have a car wash in the town, since there is no service like this. Development o f tourism should also be reconsidered in the settlement (Sava C., 2015), as the thermal bath attracts a lot o f tourists (Sava C., 2012). What is more, even the elderly likes going to the Rose Bath (Illés S., 2005). However, as the respondents see, the most important task is to invite investments o f production which would create workplaces in the town enhancing income for the town. An idea like this was the construction o f a restaurant which would be needed and which would create jobs, so I see it as a good starting step.
