The basic question of this study is how an average-sized Transdanubian city adapted to the changed economic conditions due to the Treaty of Trianon. Be-
ia which became the fifteenth largest city of Hungary with its 50.000 citizens just before the WWI. Its manufacturing industry was outstanding; plants well known all over Europe were operating here (Zsolnay Porcelain Manufactory, Hamerli Gloves Factory, An
ken by WWI and the three years of Serbian occupation. The economy of the city struggled to regain its pre-war form in the 1920s. Due to the low incomes the aggregate demand dropped and the loss of markets and natural resources through the Drava River resulted industrial difficulties. Artisans suffered sig- nificantly since they had lost most of their orders from retail clients. It was troublesome that till 1927 most of the coal production was transported to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia as part of the compensation payments. There was some increase in economic activity in the second half of the 1920s in the field of mechanical engineering and the Speyer-loans also resulted the construction of public infr
omy consolidated; there was population growth, decrease in unemployment and more and more urban development was introduced. However, the crisis of 1929 33 quickly demolished these results.
