Janos Martonyi has been Minister for Foreign Affairs since 2010. Martonyi served as State Secretary, Ministry of International Economic Relations (1990-1991), and as State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1992-1994). Martonyi was Foreign Minister in the center- right government of Hungary (1998-2002). He was managing partner of the law firm Martonyi es Kajtar Baker & McKenzie, Budapest (1994- 1998, 2002-2009).
Martonyi is also a law professor teaching private international law, international trade law, and European law at the University of Szeged where he is Head of the Institute for International Trade Law. He was a visiting professor at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium and Natolin, Poland (1994-1998), and at Central European University (1996).
As an international arbitrator, Martonyi is a member of the Board of the Permanent Arbitration Court at the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He is an elected member of the General Assembly of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. Martonyi is actively involved in politics as the President of the Free Europe Center for European Integration of FIDESZ Hungarian Civic Union, a member of the Executive Board of the Centre for European Studies Foundation of the European People’s Party, Brussels, and Chairman of the Perspective Foundation, Budapest.
Janos Martonyi is author of numerous articles and essays in various languages in the field of international trade law, competition policy and law, European integration, and international politics. His main works are: The Legal Status of Transnational Corporations; Central Europe and the European Integration; Europe, Nation, Rule of Law; Universal Values, Global Rules, Local Responsibilities.
