THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF THE EU- FALL, 2022 4 credits

Univ.Prof. Laszló Csaba Course description

This survey course is devoted to students of international relations, economics, political science and public policy. Composed of lectures and seminars, building on global cutting edge research it offers a bird’s eye view of a difficult and contestd reality of the European Union. It covers the major policy fields, policy relvant theories and focuses on potential future scenarios, with an ever stronger presence of the EU in global architecture. It revolves around the question of how far historically emerged forms and depth of integration fit to the new challenges, represented by the crisis of Ukraine, the fragility of the international financial and trade regimes, not to speak of the Climate Agreements of G26 of Glasgow, November 2021. Lectures cover the basic, general features of the topics in question, while required and recommended readings address peculiars, bits and pieces. While required reaings must be individually processed, seminar presentations from among the

RECOMMENDED allow for deepening knowledge and get involved in discoursive interaction by course participants.

Requirements: Regular, interactive presence in each and every lecture and seminar/10pc, weekly submission of summary of required readings/5 pc each, seminar presentation/10pc, review of a book of your choice from within the field/20pc. In case of difficulty, you must inform the instrucor IN ADVANCE.

Outcomes: As a survey course it offers you a comprenehsive overview of the subject.

Improves your presentational and analytical skills, familiarizes you with newest and alo with established insights from the literature, allows you to possess with expert knowledge applicable in business, policy positions and the academe. It provides you with a compass in the turbulent world of economics and politics of the European Union as a global power.

These cover various aspects of the coure subject in a depth which can not be attained in a normal rythm of teaching, but may be helpful if you write your theses on any of these topics or take special interest in any of the sub-fields. You may also choose a chapter from these books for seminar presentation, or choose these titles as subject of your book review for the course.
