Declaration of the Presidency of the Hungarian Patristic Society
The Hungarian Patristic Society is the most important organ of the Hungarian researchers of Christian antiquity. The Presidency of the Society has learned with great concern about the submission and the passing of the recent modifications to the National Higher Education Act, which will present the functioning of the Central European University with insurmountable difficulties in Hungary. We hear with sadness the voices which attempt to brand the scholarly quality of this institution. Our Society has maintained excellent relations with this internationally acclaimed university. Not a few of our members received their graduate or doctoral degrees there, or are even teaching and doing research there. Many of us have participated in the conferences, summer schools organised by CEU, and have professional connections to its departments or programs. We think that in case the CEU will be forced out of Hungary it is not only the Hungarian scientific and academic community, which will suffer a serious loss but our own society in a very concrete sense will forfeit networks, information and inspiration. For these reasons the Presidency of our Society expresses its solidarity with the colleagues at CEU, and at the same time remonstrates the above-mentioned modifications of the law.
