Thesis
„The aim of the diploma work is to facilitate the student by way of individually processing and utilizing any area of dental science:
•
to improve their abilities•
to acquire the skills of making use of the library and the research methods of dental literature•
to become capable of succinctly expressing their opinion on their own.”Main parts of the thesis
• Contents: It has to include chapters and subchapters, displaying page numbers.
• Introduction: It should end with the explicit statement of the specific aims of the study, and a short review of the relevant literature.
• Material and methods: Depending on the theme, this section can include descriptions of patients, case description, the structure of the study, the protocol employed, the research protocol used, a description of the disease, a description of methods including limits and possible errors, literary references, statistical analyses. Students need not follow this order of division when composing a literature review.
• Results: A clear presentation of the results with a summary at the end. Do not include a discussion or references in this section.
• Discussion: This section is divided on the basis of every one of the questions tackled in relation to question-formulation, method, result and literature. It ends with a conclusion on the basis of its results.
• Summary: The summary of the entire work: The results, the conclusions drawn in the discussion and a final conclusion.
• References and bibliography: References within the text and in the bibliography must be presented according to the (numbered) Vancouver reference style. The use of a reference management software is recommended, because such software uses the Vancouver reference style as its default setting.
• Charts and diagrams: Each has to be numbered and must be given a title (each chart and each diagram); abbreviations must be clarified; a source must be provided if it is not one’s own work.
References of the charts and diagrams must be given in the text. The charts must be clear and easy to understand.

General steps of literature search
•
Determination of the aim of the literature search o Topic and its boundaries, general conceptiono Expressions, authors, specific resources
•
Selecting the database•
Preparation of the literature searcho Enumeration of expressions (dictionaries, lists)
o Creating a search strategy (operators, limits, „truncation”)
o Setting the visualization of the results
•
Running of the search•
New search strategy•
Processing of the results o Selectiono Save, export to a citation management software (database, search strategy, date)
Main types of scientific works
Thesis is a work of scientific character; therefore, you have to cite scientific works, as well. The 3 main types of scientific works are the following:
•
BookIt is a thorough academic work focusing on a topic; it has(ve) author(s).
•
Collection of monographs/essaysMany authors deal with 3-4 smaller topics in different monographs/essays. An editor(s)
„connects” the short, separate studies and entitles the collection.
•
Scientific articleIt’s published in a journal. While journals encompass a broader range of topics, the articles are about specific topics. (The journals have editors and editors-in-chief but they’re not important for the thesis.) Five main types: observational, theoretical, experimental, methodological and review articles.
Managing resources
You have chosen a good topic if you can summarize it in 4-6 words.
•
Interrelated concepts•
From broader to narrower topics: general → specific concepts•
Main authors of the discipline•
General journals, online sites of the disciplineNOTE-TAKING!! (in paper or electronic form)
•
Bibliographic information:o book: author, title, publication year, page number, reading room call number, label on the shelf, etc.
o article: author, title of the article, title of the journal, publication year, volume, issue, page number
•
Literally or paraphrasedhttp://mek.niif.hu/01700/01744/01744.pdf
Plagiarism
„The thesis may be:
•
based on the student’s own scientific experiments•
a causistical (case reports)•
a clinical-pathological or a statistical evaluation•
a summary of specialized literature.”„The thesis does not necessarily have to include a new scientific achievement, but it should be the result of the student’s individual work. The source of thoughts/descriptions and results other than the student’s own must be clearly indicated. The student declares under penalty of perjury that the thesis is entirely the result of his or her own work.”
„The completed ‘declaration on plagiarism’ form, declaring that the thesis is the result of one’s own work, must be included as the very last page of the bound thesis.”
Plagiarism is the use of thoughts, texts, concepts, figures of other authors without referring to the author at all.
•
Adapting texts word-for-word•
Copying a part of the text•
Cutting and pasting two or more textsPlagiarism
„The following are forbidden in regards to the diploma-work:
a) Using someone else’s ideas, words etc. as if they were one’s own (plagiarism).
b) Writing the thesis partly or completely by someone other than the author of the thesis.
c) Using data, diagrams, results and texts from other sources without marking references;
marking no references at all; making so that one is unable to clearly identify the source by the reference used.
d) The above rules must be applied even when somebody else’s thoughts, results, conclusions etc. are summarized, paraphrased, recomposed, condensed or translated from a foreign language in the thesis.
Depending on the severity of the case, breaching the above regulations may lead to a fail grade or may be taken into consideration upon the evaluation of the thesis.”
How plagiarism can be avoided?
- Punctual citation - Quotation marks
- Presenting the scientific works from your aspect → own ideas
Bibliography
Making a bibliography is storing and arranging data and texts of the collected resources.
„The thesis has to be based upon relevant and basic literature and the most recent works on a particular topic.”
•
WHAT? (data elements)o Author(s), title, publication year, volume, editor(s)
o Author(s), title of the article, title of the journal, publication year, volume, issue, page number For electronic documents:
o Author(s), type of the medium, volume, publisher, publication year, (date of update), [date of citation], <URL>
•
HOW? (the method of description)o Unified punctuation and typography, continuous note-taking!
•
ARRANGEMENT (list)o In the order of appearance
o In alphabetic order (name of the authors)
„References in the bibliography must be presented in an alphabetical order (abc) and must be numbered.”
o In chronological order (publication year)
Bibliography
Reference management softwares
Why are they useful?
•
They help collecting the bibliographic data of documents (e.g. author, title, publication year).•
Attachments can also be stored (e.g. text, picture, video, etc.).•
The collected data can be stored according to your own criteria.•
Bibliography can be compiled based on the collected data.•
References can be made and managed in your scientific works.•
It can contribute to scientific co-operations.The most common versions:
•
Web-based service with offline tools•
Software installed to your own computerReference management softwares
EndNote Web
•
Online service for reference management, operated by Clarivate Analytics.•
It works on Windows and Mac.•
After registering from SZTE IP address, you will have access to it from anywhere (without using Proxy).•
It can be used with the same user name and password as applied for Web of Science.•
Guides can be found in the Support menu of EndNote; you can ask for help via sending e-mail to the following address: endnote@ek.szte.huZotero
•
It can be installed as a plugin in Mozilla Firefox, with components for MS Word and Libre Office.•
It gives an online memory space for synchronization between more computers.Mendeley

Not enough:
•
Are you sure that you have you looked around everywhere?•
You should extend the list of keywords.•
„Truncation” of words (*, %)•
Logical operatorsToo much:
Arrangement and filtering:
•
According to the latest published results•
In alphabetic order•
Full-text results only•
Peer-reviewed resources only•
Filtering according to subject areasQuotation marks
•
Oral microbiome: those results (articles, books, etc.) will be listed in which both of these words appear (even if they are distant from each other in the text). We will get the same results with the following: oral AND microbiome
•
„Oral microbiome”: the two words occur in the results exactly in this order.•
„Oral micro*”: we will get hits were the word „oral” is directly followed by a word starting with„micro” (e.g.: microbiota, microbe, microbial, microbleeds etc.) Punctuation is disregarded (heart-attack = heartattack).
Singular and plural forms, words with different spellings (Am or Br) will also be listed in the results (color = colour = colors = colours).
Braces, substitutes
•
Braces: the two words occur in the results exactly in this order:o {heart attack}
•
Substitutes:o */%: general substitute standing for 0 or more characters {h*r*t}: e.g. heart, harvest, homograft, hypervalent
o ?: local substitute standing for 1 character {heart?}: e.g. heart, hearts, hearty
Punctuation is regarded (heart-attack = heartattack).
Singular and plural forms, words with different spellings (Am or Br) will also be listed in the results (color = colour = colors = colours).
Boolean operators
•
ANDo
Both components have to appear in the results.o
Automatic operator if we type two words successively, e.g. (implant dentistry) = (implant AND dentistry).•
ORo
The results have to contain at least one of the components, e.g.orthodontics OR craniofacial research.
•
AND NOTo
It will exclude the following element, e.g.: periodontal treatment AND NOT oral surgery.Other operators
• W/n:
o It determines how far the two expressions can be from each other; n means the maximum number of words which can be between the two expressions. It does not specify the order of the words.
o To search for expressions: using W/3, W/4 or W/5 is advised.
o If we would like to get results in which the expression should appear in the same sentence: W/15; in the same section: W/50
• PRE/n:
o The first expression precedes the second one in a determined n number of words, e.g.
orofacial PRE/3 pain
o Don’t use operators W and PRE in the same search technique, unless you use brackets to separate the proper elements, e.g.
nanobiomaterials W/6 clinical PRE/0 dentistry INVALID
(nanobiomaterials W/6 clinical) AND (clinical PRE/0 dentistry) VALID
o Don’t use operators OR and a W or PRE in the same search technique, unless you use brackets to separate the proper elements, e.g.
oral OR maxillofacial W/3 surgery INVALID
(oral W/3 surgery) OR (maxillofacial W/3 surgery) VALID

Acquisitions suggestion
•
We can acquire textbooks for education and learning in Hungarian and foreign languages twice a year (in spring and autumn).•
To a well-aimed supply of education, we ask the instructors, interns and PhD students to help us in compiling the acquisition suggestions.•
The purchased books will be placed in the reading areas of the Klebelsberg Library, making them available for the instructors, researchers and students.•
In 2019 41 textbooks were acquired (446 516 HUF), financed by the Library.•
You can suggest the acquisition of textbooks during the academic year on this site: http://beszjav.ek.szte.hu/index.php?token=5ba2989b7f675cdccc989dcdee52faae
