Evaluating Fatness-Leanness in Farm Animals

In addition to using body composition in evaluation of nutritional experiments and in determining energy values of domestic animals, such information would be extremely useful in selecting farm animals of superior muscle development for breeding purposes. Furthermore, body composition data would be useful in evaluating changes in the body while on special hormonal or other physiological treatments. If a simple, rapid method for determination of body composition could be developed, it may even prove useful in the marketing of farm animals according to lean content.

V . CONCLUSIONS

Measurement of body composition not only has important medical implications, but is of interest to the physiologist and nutritionist in evaluating the effects of exercise, diet, and other special treatments on the body. Compositional data can be obtained by direct analysis of the body or some representative fraction thereof, or by special indirect techniques.

Among the more promising indirect methods for estimating body com-position are the dilution techniques and the densitometric procedures.

The usefulness of such techniques, along with their advantages and dis­

advantages, have been discussed. In addition, some of the more prom­

ising new methods were considered.
