Figure 1. In the TOTEM Collaboration, we have performed a precision measurement of the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward scattering amplitude of elastic scattering, probing the nuclear-Coulomb interference region at very low four-momentum transfer. Our result excludes the simplified West-Yennie treatement of Coulomb –nuclear interference and allows for the experimental investigation of the impact parameter dependence of elastic proton-proton scattering. This TOTEM measurement was selected to the cover page of European Physical Journal C in December 2016, due to its unprecedented precision and novelty.
