The relief was probably the middle part of a marble altar. On its two sides, and thus with a semblance of

perspective, we see the apostles surrounding the risen Christ, whose wounds are being inspected by a doubting Thomas. Evidently, the sculptor sought to emphasise the individual character and emotions of the apostles by giving them different facial expressions, gestures and clothing. Stylistically, the work shows a close affinity with sixteenth-century Neapolitan art. The nearest analogy is with the apostles of the marble altar of Mary’s Ascension in the Somma Chapel of the Church of San Giovanni a Carbonara, Naples. The stylistic similarities of the two works suggest that the relief in Budapest was also produced by the Neapolitan sculptor Gian Domenico d’Auria.
