Beside t h e u n i q u e s , c o d i c e s , v a l u a b l e m a n u s c r i p t s , i n c u n a b u l a , t h e d o c u m e n t s of t h e l i v i n g p a s t a n d p r e s e n t of H u n g a r i a n science a n d l i t e r a t u r e , i t c o n t a i n s t h e basic w o r k s of scientific l i t e r a t u r e m o n o g r a p h s , h a n d b o o k s , r e f e r e n c e w o r k s , a n d also t h e m o s t i m p o r - t a n t m e a n s of i n f o r m a t i o n for u p - t o - d a t e research w o r k , periodicals. A t p r e s e n t n o less t h a n 4000 k i n d s of periodicals a r e received c o v e r i n g a l m o s t e v e r y b r a n c h of k n o w l e d g e , w r i t t e n i n p r a c t i c a l l y e v e r y civilised languages.

I n d e v e l o p i n g t h e full stock of some 870 0 0 0 l i b r a r y u n i t s , a p r o m i n e n t p a r t — b o t h q u a n t i t a t i v e a n d q u a l i t a t i v e — h a s b e e n a n d is b e i n g p l a y e d b y t h e t r a d i t i o n a l i n t e r n a t i o n a l e x c h a n g e of p u b l i c a t i o n s . This p r a c t i c e is n e a r l y a s old a s t h e L i b r a r y itself, — it w a s b e g u n in 1833. I t was t h e f o u n d e r of t h e A c a d e m y himself, I s t v á n Széchenyi, w h o h a n d e d o v e r t h e first e x c h a n g e copies t o f o r e i g n l e a r n e d s o c i e t i r s . At t h e t u r n of t h e c e n t u r y t h e L i b r a r y was m a i n - t a i n i n g e x c h a n g e r e l a t i o n s w i t h s o m e 200 i n s t i t u t i o n s , a n d b e f o r e W o r l d

T h e t u r n i n g of t h e A c a d e m y a n d i t s L i b r a r y i n t o a n i n s t i t u t i o n of t h e socialist t y p e a f t e r t h e L i b e r a t i o n , e x p a n d e d t h i s field of i t s a c t i v i t y o n a v e r y large s c a l e . N o w a d a y s i t s e x c h a n g e r e l a t i o n s i n v o l v e m o r e t h a n 1700 i n s t i t u t i o n s of s o m e 86 s t a t e s . T h i s v o l u m e y i e l d s a n i n s i g h t i n t o t h e a c t i v i t y of t h e l i b r a r i a n s of t h e A c a d e m y d u r i n g t h e n e a r l y one a n d a half c e n t u r i e s of its e x i s t e n c e , in t h e s e r v i c e of H u n g a r i a n c u l t u r e a n d s c i e n c e . I n a d d i t i o n t o a n a c c o u n t of t h e L i b r a r y ' s p r o g r e s s i v e t r a d i t i o n s , i t a l s o gives a n o u t l i n e — t h o u g h o n l y i n g e n e r a l t e r m s — of t h e e f f o r t s m a d e i n t h e s p i r i t of socialist c u l t u r a l a n d s c i e n t i f i c p o l i c y b y t h e A c a d e m y , w h i c h was r e f o r m e d a f t e r t h e L i b e r a t i o n , t o b e c o m e a n e f f e c t i v e , d e v e l o p i n g a n d p r o s p e r i o u s i n s t i t u t i o n .

T H E H I S T O R Y A N D T A S K S O F T H E L I B R A R Y O F T H E H U N G A R I A N A C A D E M Y O F S C I E N C E S

u r i n g H u n g a r y ' s s t r u g g l e f o r i n d e p e n d e n c e in t h e e a r l y d e c a d e s of t h e n i n e t e e n t h c e n t u r y one of t h e m a i n t a s k s was t h e c u l t i v a t i o n of t h e H u n g a r i a n l a n g u a g e . O n e of t h e m e a s u r e s t a k e n t o this e n d , w a s t h e f o u n d a - t i o n of t h e H u n g a r i a n L e a r n e d S o c i e t y a t t h e N a t i o n a l A s s e m b l y of 1825. I n c o n t r a s t t o s i m i l a r i n s t i t u t i o n s i n m o s t c o u n t r i e s , it was e s t a b l i s h e d n o t b y g r a c e of t h e s o v e r e i g n , b u t b y H u n g a r i a n s o c i e t y a t large. T h e H u n g a r i a n A c a d e m y h a s t h e r e f o r e n e v e r b e e n a „ r o y a l " o n e . I t s f o u n d e r was C o u n t I s t v á n S z é c h e n y i , a g r e a t p o l i t i c i a n of t h e a g e o f reforms, w h o o f f e r e d his o n e y e a r ' s i n c o m e t o s u p p o r t t h e a i m s of t h e A c a d e m y (Fig. 1).

T h e e x a m p l e of t h e g e n e r o u s f o u n d e r w a s followed b y C o u n t J ó z s e f Teleki, t h e f i r s t P r e s i d e n t of t h e A c a d e m y , w h o i n 1826 p r e s e n t e d his l i b r a r y of 30 000 v o l u m e s t o t h e S o c i e t y , a n d t h u s l a i d t h e f o u n d a t i o n s of t h e L i b r a r y of t h e H u n g a r i a n A c a d e m y of S c i e n c e s . (Fig. 3). A c c o r d i n g t o t h e d e e d of f o u n d a t i o n , h e m a d e h i s d o n a t i o n „ f i l l e d with e n t h u s i a s m by l o v e of his c o u n t r y , t o p r o m o t e t h e p u b l i c w e a l " , a n d for „ t h e use of e v e r y c i t i z e n . "

A t t h i s t i m e t h e S z é c h é n y i L i b r a r y of t h e N a t i o n a l M u s e u m , d o n a t e d b y t h e f a t h e r of t h e I s t v á n S z é c h e n y i who f o u n d e d t h e A c a d e m y , m o r e o v e r , t h e U n i v e r s i t y L i b r a r y were a l r e a d y f u n c t i o n i n g . T h e s e t h r e e l a r g e libraries, c o m p l e m e n t a r y t o o n e a n o t h e r , t o o k t h e p l a c e of a single n a t i o n a l l i b r a r y o f g e n e r a l scope in collecting a n d p e r f o r m e d i t s c o m p r e h e n s i v e tasks. T h i s s i t u a t i o n h a s b e e n c h a r a c t e r i s t i c of H u n g a r i a n l i b r a r y s y s t e m r i g h t u p t o t h e p r e s e n t .

T h e H u n g a r i a n A c a d e m y of S c i e n c e s began its w o r k in t e m p o r a r y , h i r e d premises. T h e r e was n o r o o m for e s t a b l i s h i n g t h e T e l e k i L i b r a r y t h e r e a n d t h e hook c o l l e c t i o n , t h e r e f o r e , p r o v i s i o n a l l y a w a i t e d i t s p e r m a n e n t h o m e w i t h the d o n a t i n g family.

M e a n w h i l e t h e L i b r a r y c o n t i n u e d t o grow. T h e e x a m p l e of t h e f o u n d e r was f o l l o w e d b y o t h e r s . P r i v a t e p e r s o n s a n d families, a l m o s t in c o m p e t i t i o n with o n e a n o t h e r , p r e s e n t e d the t r e a s u r e s of their l i b r a r i e s , s o m e t i m e s whole collections, t o t h e L i b r a r y of t h e A c a d e m y . A good m a n y c o m m o n p e o p l e also increased i t s stock. As f a r back as t b e e i g h t e e n t h c e n t u r y , t h e g e n e r a l desire to e s t a b l i s h t h e H u n g a r i a n L e a r n e d S o c i e t y was d e e p - r o o t e d in t h e b e s t sons of t h e n a t i o n . A c h a r a c t e r i s t i c e x a m p l e is t h e f a c t t h a t more t h a n a d e c a d e before t h e f o u n d a t i o n I s t v á n S á n d o r , , t h e first H u n g a r i a n b i b l i o g r a p h e r " , had, in h i s will a l r e a d y l e f t his collection of books, p i c t u r e s , a n d coins, supple- m e n t e d b y a c o n s i d e r a b l e f o u n d a t i o n t o t h e A c a d e m y t o be e s t a b l i s h e d a t some t i m e i n t h e f u t u r e .

T h e A c a d e m y ' s m e m b e r s also a d d e d works o f t h e i r own t o t h e stocks of t h e L i b r a r y . T h e b o o k a n d m a n u s c r i p t b e q u e s t s of a n u m b e r of p r o m i n e n t persons b e c a m e p a r t of t h e Library, i n c l u d i n g , a m o n g o t h e r s , t h o s e o f F e r e n c K a z i n c z y , t h e o r g a n i z e r of H u n g a r i a n l i t e r a r y life, M i h á l y V ö r ö s m a r t y , t h e g r e a t e s t H u n g a r i a n r o m a n t i c poet, t h e h i s t o r i a n of l i t e r a t u r e F e r e n c T o l d y , the G e n e r a l S e c r e t a r y o f t h e A c a d e m y a s well as s e v e r a l of t h e i r c o n t e m p o - raries. T h e L i b r a r y w a s a l s o a u g m e n t e d b y valuable c o d i c e s . As a g i f t of J ó z s e f Teleki, t h e f o u n d e r , t h e L i b r a r y e v e n o b t a i n e d a c o d e x f r o m t h e w o r l d - f a m o u s B i b l i o t h e c a Corvina of M a t t h i a s C o r v i n u s , the last n a t i o n a l k i n g a n d g r e a t h u m a n i s t .

P a r a l l e l with t h e s e gifts, t h e o r g a n i z i n g a n d d i r e c t i n g a c t i v i t y c a r r i e d on b y t h e A c a d e m y i n t h e field of s c i e n c e also c o n t r i b u t e d to t h e L i b r a r y ' s growth. T h e a c a d e m i c i a n s set about c o l l e c t i n g t h e v o c a b u l a r y of t h e H u n g a r i a n language, c o n d u c t e d c o m p e t i t i o n s f o r s c i e n t i f i c a n d l i t e r a r y works, criticizing them a n d p u b l i s h i n g t h e b e s t . T h e p u b l i c a t i o n of y e a r - b o o k s a n d a s c i e n t i f i c journal w a s s t a r t e d . T h e A c a d e m y s u b s c r i b e d t o f o r e i g n journals a n d e s t a b - lished e x c h a n g e relations w i t h foreign i n s t i t u t i o n s . I n 1840 t h e p r i n t i n g offices were o b l i g e d b y law t o s e n d deposit c o p i e s also t o t h e L i b r a r y of t h e A c a d e m y .

T h e s t o c k , w h i c h grew t o g e t h e r w i t h t h e A c a d e m y a n d t h e T e l e k i Lib- r a r y , s e r v i n g as hasis f o r t h e L i b r a r y of t h e A c a d e m y , were f o u n d j o i n t a c c o m - m o d a t i o n in 1836. T h e house, the f o r m e r h o m e of t h e A c a d e m y a n d i t s L i b r a r y , still s t a n d s i n t a c t a t t h e busiest s p o t of t h e c e n t r e of t h e city, a t 3, P e t ő f i S á n d o r S t r e e t , b e a r i n g t h e n a m e of t h e best k n o w n H u n g a r i a n p o e t . T h e collection t h e n consisting of about 50 000 volumes, w a s housed on t h e second floor in t h e eight p r e m i s e s of t h e w i n g facing t h e c o u r t y a r d (Fig. 4) T h e d o n a t i o n of t h e Teleki f a m i l y was now k e p t here, b u t a d m i n i s t e r e d s e p a r a t e l y . T h e L i b r a r y of t h e A c a d e m y was o p e n e d in 1844. On this occasion Mihály V ö r ö s m a r t y , t h e H u n g a r i a n prince of p o e t s of t h a t t i m e wrote a n o d e u n d e r t h e title ,,Thoughts in the library" (Fig.6). , , H a s t h e w o r l d m a d e progress t h r o u g h b o o k s ? " — h e asks. N o t w i t h s t a n d i n g t h e m a n y depressing e x a m p l e s of t h e p a s t , h e feels t h a t we h a v e to struggle b y m e a n s of b o o k s for t h e r u l e of t r u t h a n d love, f o r t h e p r o t e c t i o n of t h e p o o r e s t . V ö r ö s m a r t y as one of t h e leaders of t h e A c a d e m y was g i v e n inspiration t o t h e poem in t h i s L i b r a r y , b e c a u s e for lack of s e p a r a t e r e a d i n g rooms a n d w o r k i n g places research w o r k e r s a n d l i b r a r i a n s w o r k e d on t a b l e s among t h e shelves in t h o s e days.

T h e f i r s t p r i n t e d directions f o r l i b r a r y a d m i n i s t r a t i o n a n d r u l e s of pro- cedure, compiled in a well-considered a n d e x p e r t m a n n e r by F e r e n c Toldy, were p r e p a r e d in 1848, t h e year of t h e revolution, t h a t was so f u l l of p r o m i s e for t h e n a t i o n (Fig. 7—8).

I n 1849, a f t e r t h e suppression of t h e struggle f o r f r e e d o m , t h e A c a d e m y ' s a c t i v i t y , t o o , was p a r a l y s e d by a b s o l u t i s m .

I n 1851 F e r e n c T o l d y , acting as b o t h General S e c r e t a r y a n d L i b r a r i a n of t h e A c a d e m y , yielded t h e direction of t h e L i b r a r y t o P á l H u n f a l v y , o n e of t h e f o u n d e r s of F i n n o - U g r i a n c o m p a r a t i v e linguistics.

I n t h e 1860's m o r e f a v o u r a b l e d a y s d a w n e d f o r t h e A c a d e m y a n d its L i b r a r y . N a t i o n a l c o n t r i b u t i o n s m a d e it possible t o b e g i n building t h e palace of t h e A c a d e m y . A w o r t h y place was f o u n d for it in o n e of t h e m o s t b e a u t i f u l spots of B u d a p e s t , n e a r t o the o t h e r e s t a b l i s h m e n t s d u e to I s t v á n Széchenyi, in t h e n e i g h b o u r h o o d of t h e T u n n e l u n d e r Castle Hill a n d of t h e C h a i n Bridge linking B u d a with P e s t . Friedrich Stiller, an a r c h i t e c t of Berlin designed t h e palace in t h e spirit of t h e flourishing I t a l i a n R e n a i s s a n c e . T h e b u i l d i n g was

c a r r i e d o u t b y H u n g a r i a n a r c h i t e c t s a n d c r a f t s m e n . I n 1958, a b o u t a h u n d r e d y e a r s a f t e r t h e c o m p l e t i o n of t h e b u i l d i n g , d u r i n g repairs t o t h e f l o o r of t h e a s s e m b l y hall, a l e t t e r was d i s c o v e r e d f r o m t h e j o i n e r s w o r k i n g o n t h e b u i l d i n g a t t h a t t i m e . T h e y f i n i s h t h e i r l e t t e r with t h e w i s h t h a t t h o s e w h o will r e a d i t m a y see b e t t e r d a y s t h e n t h e y d i d (Fig. 10).

T h e m o v e i n t o t h e p a l a c e i n i t i a t e d a n e w p e r i o d for b o t h t h e A c a d e m y a n d its L i b r a r y . T h e m o v e was d i r e c t e d b y J á n o s A r a n y , t h e G e n e r a l S e c r e t a r y of t h a t t i m e , t h e g r e a t e s t H u n g a r i a n realist p o e t a n d t r a n s l a t o r a n d b e s t f r i e n d of P e t ő f i . His a c t i v i t y c o n n e c t e d w i t h t h e L i b r a r y is recorded i n i n n u m e r a b l e d o c u m e n t s d a t i n g f r o m t h e t h i r t e e n y e a r p e r i o d while ho w a s t h e A c a d e m y ' s G e n e r a l S e c r e t a r y . H e took p a r t i n t h e work of t h e L i b r a r y C o m m i t t e e , a n d i t was h e w h o p r o p o s e d , a m o n g o t h e r t h i n g s , t h a t t h e n a m e s of t h e L i b r a r y ' s f o u n d e r s b e e n g r a v e d in a m e m o r i a l t a b l e t . T h a t n o t h i n g e s c a p e d his a t t e n t i o n , a p p e a r s f r o m t h e f a c t t h a t it w a s a l s o he w h o i n t r o d u c e d t h e u s e of call slips f o r r e a d e r s . H e w a s a d e v o t e d user of t h e L i b r a r y .

T h e m o v e i n t o t h e palace t e m p o r a r i l y p u t a n e n d t o t h e w a n t of space, so t h a t t h e r e o r g a n i z a t i o n of t h e L i b r a r y c o u l d b e b e g u n . T o g e t h e r with t h e linguist J ó z s e f B u d e n z a n d t h e a r c h a e o l o g i s t F l ó r i s R ó m e r , P á l H u n f a l v y , w h o was t h e n t h e h e a d of L i b r a r y , w o r k e d o u t a n e w shelving s y s t e m a n d s u b j e c t a r r a n g e m e n t .

W i t h t h e p e r m i s s i o n of t h e d o n a t i n g f a m i l y , t h e T e l e k i L i b r a r y w a s u n i t e d w i t h t h e m a t e r i a l collected b y t h e L i b r a r y of t h e A c a d e m y . T h e a r r a n g e - m e n t of t h e s t o c k a c c o r d i n g t o s u b j e c t s was b e g u n . T h e s h e l f - m a r k s o r i g i n a t e d f r o m t h e a b b r e v i a t i o n s of t h e H u n g a r i a n n a m e s i n d i c a t i n g f i f t y - f o u r s u b j e c t s (e. g. F i g . 8, r i g h t t o p corner). A t t h a t t i m e t h e L i b r a r y h a d t h r e e k i n d s of c a t a l o g u e : t o p o g r a p h i c a l , a l p h a b e t i c a l , a n d s u b j e c t catalogues. T h e L i b r a r y h o u s e d in t h e h e a d q u a r t e r s , w a s o p e n e d in 1867.

F r o m t h e m o v e i n t o t h e n e w b u i l d i n g t o t h e F i r s t W o r l d W a r , t h e g r o w t h of t h e L i b r a r y w a s s t e a d y . A t f i r s t t h e t e c h n i c a l e q u i p m e n t w a s also u p - t o - d a t e . J ' h e r e a d i n g r o o m h a d g a s l i g h t i n g a n d , f r o m 1895, electric lighting. T h e m a i n s t a c k - r o o m w a s f i t t e d w i t h c e n t r a l h e a t i n g b u i l t in t h e f l o o r .

I n 1897 t h e L i b r a r y ' s stock g r e w r a p i d l y b e c a u s e t h e p r i n t i n g offices h a d b e e n obliged b y a m o r e s t r i n g e n t l a w t o deliver d e p o s i t copies. Llowever, t h e r e

w e r e n e i t h e r e n o u g h m a n p o w e r n o r a d e q u a t e s p a c e f o r d e a l i n g w i t h a n in- c r e a s e d r a t e of a c q u i s i t i o n . T h e s e d i f f i c u l t i e s b e c a m e f a i r l y critical d u r i n g t h e F i r s t W o r l d W a r . In t h e s e h a r d t i m e s K á l m á n S z i l y w a s t h e G e n e r a l Secre- t a r y . S e v e r a l l i b r a r y p u b l i c a t i o n s a r e l i n k e d w i t h his n a m e a t t h e b e g i n n i n g of h i s t e r m of office. I n 1905, f o r i n s t a n c e , a list of t h e p e r i o d i c a l s a v a i l a b l e in t h e L i b r a r y of t h e H u n g a r i a n A c a d e m y of Sciences w a s p u b l i s h e d .

I n respect t o b o t h a c q u i s i t i o n a n d e x c h a n g e , t h e w a r - y e a r s r e s u l t e d in a g r e a t regression. T h e A c a d e m y , s p o n s o r e d b y f o u n d a t i o n s , g r e w p o o r . T h e s i t u a t i o n a f t e r t h e w a r was no m o r e f a v o u r a b l e . I n f l a t i o n h i n d e r e d t h e p u r - c h a s e of hooks f r o m a b r o a d a n d t h e n u m b e r of d e p o s i t copies r e c e i v e d also d e c r e a s e d s t r o n g l y .

U n d e r t h e d i r e c t i o n of Z o l t á n Ferenczi, t h e n e x t Chief L i b r a r i a n , new s t a c k - r o o m s were a d d e d t o t h e L i b r a r y . T h i s m a d e i t possible in 1925 t o house in a n a d e q u a t e m a n n e r t h e whole s t o c k , consisting of 262 000 v o l u m e s .

T h e F i n n o - U g r i a n scholar J ó z s e f Szinnyei, d u r i n g his p e r i o d a s Chief L i b r a r i a n , c o n s i d e r e d it his m a i n t a s k t o process t h e u n c a t a l o g u e d m a t e r i a l . T h e d e p a r t m e n t s of t h e L i b r a r y were o r g a n i z e d f o r u p - t o - d a t e l i b r a r y w o r k in 1948.

M o d e r n i z a t i o n was soon m a k i n g itself f e l t i n e v e r y d o m a i n of l i b r a r y life.

I n 1948 t h e s t o c k s w e r e a u g m e n t e d b y 7000 w o r k s of w h i c h p u r c h a s e s f r o m a b r o a d a c c o u n t e d f o r 1200 v o l u m e s . T h e r e g u l a r a r r i v a l of 530 f o r e i g n a n d 170 H u n g a r i a n p e r i o d i c a l s i n d i c a t e d t h e f u t u r e t r e n d of g r o w t h . T h e f a c t , t h a t t h e r e a d i n g - r o o m w a s o p e n all d a y , a l s o complied w i t h t h e new r e q u i r e m e n t s . T h u s t h e y e a r 1949 was a herald, a n i n t r o d u c t o r y p e r i o d of t h e L i b r a r y ' s large-scale d e v e l o p m e n t .

I n a d d i t i o n t o l i b r a r y w o r k p r o p e r , t h e L i b r a r y also engages in scientific a c t i v i t y of its o w n , i n c l u d i n g t h a t in t h e field of l i b r a r y science. T h e n e x t door opens i n t o t h e Periodicals Reading Room. It has a shelving of c u r r e n t issues of a b o u t 1300 periodicals of t h e a p p r o x i m a t e l y 4000 serial titles ( j o u r n a l s , a n n a l s , y e a r b o o k s , r e p o r t s , etc.) received. 8 research workers can be a c c o m m o d a t e d in this room. Bot h t h e a l p h a b e t i c a l a n d s u b j e c t catalogues of t h e periodicals a r e housed h e r e (Fig. 13). T h e f u l l stock of periodicals c o m p r i s i n g some 10 000 kinds of p u b l i c a t i o n in a b o u t 100 000 v o l u m e s , is l o c a t e d in t h e n e w periodicals s t a c k of t h e L i b r a r y t h a t was c o n s t r u c t e d a f t e r t h e L i b e r a t i o n , a n d is e q u i p p e d w i t h m o d e r n a d j u s t a b l e i r o n shelves (Fig. 14). T h e D e p a r t m e n t consists of f o u r i n t e r c o m m u n i c a t i n g r o o m s each f u r n i s h e d like a n old one-room l i b r a r y (Fig. 16). A wooden s t a i r c a s e leads u p t o t h e g a l l e r y w h i c h also houses a n u m b e r of m a n u s c r i p t s a n d o t h e r m a t e r i a l .

T h e L i b r a r y of t h e A c a d e m y has, f r o m i t s v e r y inception, collected n o t o n l y p r i n t e d m a t t e r , b u t also manuscripts, i n c l u d i n g codices, old m a n u s c r i p t s , d o c u m e n t s , r e c o r d s , collections of historical sources, l i t e r a r y a n d scientific r e l i q u i a of e v e r y k i n d which w e r e collected w i t h o u t a n y well-defined scope.

T o m a n a g e this h e t e r o g e n e o u s m a t e r i a l , a D e p a r t m e n t of M a n u s c r i p t s was set u p in 1916 u n d e r t h e guidance of Floris R o m e r , t h e archaeologist a n d a r c h i v i s t , w h o a r r a n g e d t h e m a t e r i a l in 16 s u b j e c t fields. T h e older m a t e r i a l is still a r -

r a n g e d a c c o r d i n g t o his classification. S e p a r a t e old loose-leaf catalogues contain t h e catalogue p a g e s of m a n u s c r i p t s a n d of t h e correspondence m a t e - rial. N o w these c a t a l o g u e s are m o r e simple.

I n t h e reading r o o m of t h e D e p a r t m e n t a show-case is p l a c e d parallel with t h e r e a d i n g desks. I t s glasses a r e covered w i t h green felt t o p r e s e r v e t h e precious h a n d w r i t t e n n a t i o n a l values f r o m light. T h e s e include a P r a y e r - h o o k of B e n i g n a Magyar w r i t t e n in H u n g a r i a n in 1513 (Fig. 17) a n d t h e t h i c k Érsekújvári-Codex, also w r i t t e n in H u n g a r y a t t h e b e g i n n i n g of t h e s i x t e e n t h c e n t u r y ( F i g . 18). I t w a s copied on t h e Isle of R a b b i t s (which is t h e f o r m e r n a m e of t h e M a r g a r e t - I s l a n d t h a t lies b e t w e e n B u d a a n d Pest). One of t h e pages bears t h e n a m e of t h e copying n u n : M á r t a S ö v é n y h á z i . T h e L i b r a r y ' s o n l y C o r v i n - c o d e x is also p l a c e d here: t h e w o r k of L u d o v i c u s C a r b o : De laudibus Matthiae Regis (Fig. 19). I t s silk b i n d i n g is disintegrating, h u t t h e codex itself is u n h a r m e d , its gilding gleams, a n d b e a r s t h e c o a t - o f - a r m s of t h e H u n y a d i d y n a s t y , r e p r e s e n t i n g a r a v e n holding a ring. A n o t h e r t r e a s u r e of t h e L i b r a r y is t h e Liber de septem signis t h a t h a d b e e n t a k e n t o t h e C o r v i n a - l i b r a r y f r o m K i n g S i g i s m u n d ' s collection (Fig. 20). A t present t h i s codex is p l a c e d on de- posit a t t h e Museum of F i n e Arts.

T h i s D e p a r t m e n t h a s 125 codices, 85 of t h e m m e d i a e v a l . A m o n g t h e m are t w e l v e m a n u s c r i p t s b e a r i n g m e d i a e v a l records of t h e H u n g a r i a n language.

T h e s h o w - c a s e displays t h e following m a n u s c r i p t s of our g r e a t writers a n d , poets: a L a t i n letter of Miklós Zrínyi, t h e soldier-poet who d e f e a t e d t h e T u r k s e a r e p o r t t o t h e A c a d e m y b y S á n d o r K ö r ö s i C'soma (Fig. 42), t h e a u t h o r of t h f first T i b e t a n g r a m m a r , a d r a w i n g b y K a z i n c z y , t h e neologist a n d organiser oe H u n g a r i a n literature, t h a t he drew l o o k i n g out of t h e window of his jail, w h e r . he h a d b e e n imprisoned f o r d i s s e m i n a t i n g t h e ideas of t h e F r e n c h R e v o l u t i o n , J á n o s B a t s á n y i was also b a n i s h e d t o L i n z a t t h e e n d of t h e e i g h t e e n t h c e n t u r y : because of his r e v o l u t i o n a r y ideas. Of t h e i t e m s of t h e Old Book Collection c o n t a i n i n g m a t t e r s of H u n g a r i a n i n t e r e s t , m e n t i o n m u s t b e m a d e of Chronica Hungarorum ( A u g s b u r g 1488) b y J á n o s T h u r ó c z i t h a t c o n s t i t u e s a n i m p o r t a n t source for t h e Age of t h e H u n y a d i s (Fig. 38), a n d of a w o r k of P e l b á r t T e m e s v á r i e n t i t l e d Pomerium de tempore issued in A u g s b u r g in 1502 a n d d i s s e m i n a t e d all o v e r E u r o p e . T h e t i t l e p a g e of t h i s w o r k is a r e m a r k a b l e w o o d c u t (Fig. 39). An i m p o r t a n t i t e m is t h e f i r s t b o o k p u b l i s h e d e n t i r e l y in H u n g a r i a n : T h e Epistles of St. Paid, b y B e n e d e k K o m j á t h i (Cracow, 1533) (Fig. 40).

One of t h e m o s t v a l u a b l e p a r t s of t h e collection of old b o o k s was also o b t a i n e d b y t h e L i b r a r y b y w a y of d o n a t i o n . I n 1905 György R á t h , director of t h e H u n g a r i a n M u s e u m of A p p l i e d A r t s , b e q u e a t h e d his collection of nearly 2500 v o l u m e s t o t h e L i b r a r y , e m b r a c i n g books w i t h a m a t e u r b i n d i n g s , p a r t of w h i c h was p r i n t e d in H u n g a r y b e f o r e 1711, while t h e rest w e r e published a b r o a d , a b o u t H u n g a r y .

A p a r t f r o m this collection, o t h e r pieces of t h e Old Book Collection were in a v e r y p o o r condition, w i t h d i s i n t e g r a t i n g v o l u m e s , worn a n d s l a s h e d leather bindings, b r o k e n wooden b o a r d s a n d repairs a n d new b i n d i n g s d o n e w i t h o u t e x p e r t knowledge. T h i s m a d e it n e c e s s a r y t o set a b o u t t h e work of conserving a n d r e s t o r i n g t h e m a t e r i a l . T h e b o o k s also h a d t o b e p r o t e c t e d a g a i n s t insects a n d m o u l d . A f t e r a c a r e f u l s t u d y i n g of t h e foreign — m a i n l y I t a l i a n — a n d H u n g a r i a n l i t e r a t u r e of t h i s s u b j e c t , t h e work b e g a n w i t h highly skilled collab- o r a t o r s six y e a r s ago. T h e b o o k b i n d i n g shop of t h e L i b r a r y , s e t u p in 1958, also t a k e s a considerable p a r t in t h i s work.

Some 500 v o l u m e s h a v e so f a r b e e n restored a n d conserved. I n t h e course of t h i s work we did not aim a t bibliophile perfection. O u r t a s k w a s t o preserve

for p o s t e r i t y all the v a l u e s left t o us b y previous a g e s . We m a y t h u s speak of c o n s e r v a t i o n rather t h a n of r e s t o r a t i o n in this f a c e t of our work. W h e r e new b i n d i n g s h a d to he m a d e we insisted o n two m a i n f e a t u r e s : t h e n e w b i n d i n g must b e a b l e to c o n s e r v e t h e m a t e r i a l f o r f u r t h e r c e n t u r i e s , a n d it m u s t be in h a r m o n y w i t h the g e n e r a l effect of t h e collection (Fig. 51—52).

T h e work of r e s t o r a t i o n s o m e t i m e s p r o v i d e s v a l u a b l e s u r p r i s e s : we s u c c e e d e d in steeping a o n e folio i n c u n a b l e c a l e n d a r d a t i n g f r o m 1483 out of a book c o v e r (Fig. 36), while from a n o t h e r one we g a i n e d a p l a y i n g - c a r d f r o m 1570 ( F i g . 37).

T h e r e is also a s h o w - c a s e in t h e last room of t h e D e p a r t m e n t of M a n u - scripts a n d Old Books, c o n t a i n i n g r a r i t i e s of the collections. This r o o m belonged to t h e a p a r t m e n t of t h e g r e a t G e n e r a l S e c r e t a r y of t h e A c a d e m y , .János A r a n y , the p o e t . His m e m o r y is p r e s e r v e d b y t h e old s t o v e , t h e p o e t ' s a r m c h a i r a n d his p i c t u r e on the wall.

R e t u r n i n g to t h e g r o u n d - f l o o r of t h e A c a d e m y , t h e visitor m a y e n t e r t h e Oriental Department. I t w a s opened in 1951. T h e s t o c k of t h e m a t e r i a l collected here w a s c o n s t i t u t e d b y t h e o r i e n t a l i t e m s which h a d been f o u n d w i t h i n t h e v a r i o u s s u b j e c t areas o f t h e m a i n s t a c k of the L i b r a r y . T h e T i b e t a n m a n u - scripts of Sándor K ö r ö s i Csorna c a m e t o H u n g a r y b y w a y of T i v a d a r D u k a , a m e d i c a l colonel in I n d i a (Fig. 43). T h e e n t r y t o t h e Oriental D e p a r t m e n t is t h r o u g h a r e a d i n g room, a c c o m m o d a t i n g 8 r e a d e r s . A c o n s i d e r a b l e d e c l i n e was c a u s e d in t h i s r e s p e c t b y t h e F i r s t W o r l d W a r . While i n 1913 t h e A c a d e m y h a d b e e n m a i n t a i n i n g e x c h a n g e relations w i t h 287 i n s t i t u t e s a b r o a d , i n 1918 n o t m o r e t h a n 87 i n s t i t u t e s m a i n t a i n e d t h e s e r e l a t i o n s .

D u r i n g t h e t h i r t i e s a n d forties e x c h a n g e a g r e e m e n t s w e r e e s t a b l i s h e d w i t h 450 i n s t i t u t i o n s . T h i s w a s all t h e m o r e i m p o r t a n t a s t h e t h e n l e a d e r s h i p of t h e A c a d e m y did n o t d e v e l o p t h e L i b r a r y b y p u r c h a s i n g a n y b o o k s a t all, a n d t h u s e x c h a n g e c o n s t i t u t e d t h e o n l y p o s s i b i l i t y of o b t a i n i n g t h e m o d e r n sci- e n t i f i c m a t e r i a l needed. T h e L i b r a r y , d e s p i t e t h e c o n t e m p o r a r y g o v e r n m e n t ' s n a r r o w - m i n d e d , c h a u v i n i s t i c a t t i t u d e t o c u l t u r a l policy, c o n t i n u e d m a i n t a i n i n g i t s b r o a d e x c h a n g e r e l a t i o n s i n those y e a r s t o o . T h i s c a n b e well seen f r o m t h e f a c t t h a t t h e L i b r a r y e s t a b l i s h e d r e g u l a r a n d e v e r d e v e l o p i n g e x c h a n g e rela- t i o n s with t h e a c a d e m i c c e n t e r s of t h e S o v i e t U n i o n (Moscow, L e n i n g r a d , K i e v , etc.) a n d w i t h t h e a c a d e m i e s of t h e n e i g h b o u r i n g s t a t e s .

T h e S e c o n d World W a r a g a i n i n t e r r u p t e d t h i s b r o a d e x c h a n g e a c t i v i t y . A f t e r t h e L i b e r a t i o n , h o w e v e r , t h e s i t u a t i o n g r a d u a l l y i m p r o v e d . I n 1946—1949

A s u d d e n d e v e l o p m e n t took p l a c e i n 1950, on t h e occasion of t h e r e o r g a n - ization of t h e A c a d e m y , w h i c h o r g a n i z e d t h e r e g u l a r p u b l i c a t i o n of s c i e n t i f i c works a n d — in a d d i t i o n — b e g a n t h e p u b l i c a t i o n of n e w A c t a , T h i s e n a b l e d t h e L i b r a r y t o e n l a r g e t h e scope of i t s e x c h a n g e s a n d r a i s e t h e i r level. B y t h e end of 1950 e x c h a n g e r e l a t i o n s w e r e e s t a b l i s h e d w i t h 480 f o r e i g n i n s t i t u t i o n s , a n d b y 1957 this n u m b e r was t r e b l e d . N o w a d a y s e x c h a n g e a c t i v i t i e s i n v o l v e more t h a n 1700 i n s t i t u t i o n s of 80 s t a t e s (Fig. 53). A t p r e s e n t 40 p e r c e n t of t h e L i b r a r y ' s accessions of b o o k s a n d 80 p e r c e n t of t h e p e r i o d i c a l s a r c o b t a i n e d by e x c h a n g e .

W i t h t h e r e o r g a n i z a t i o n of t h e A c a d e m y t h e L i b r a r y w a s g i v e n t h e t a s k of s e n d i n g t h e a c h i e v e m e n t s of H u n g a r i a n scientific r e s e a r c h w o r k t o l e a r n e d societies a b r o a d in t h e f o r m of r e g u l a r e x c h a n g e . T h i s is e s s e n t i a l , b e c a u s e o u r p u b l i c a t i o n s in H u n g a r i a n are o n l y s l i g h t l y read a b r o a d , on a c c o u n t of d i f f i - culties d u e t o t h e l a n g u a g e . Our r e s e a r c h workers o n t h e o t h e r h a n d , c a n b e - come a c q u a i n t e d with t h e a d v a n c e s a n d m e t h o d s of s c i e n t i f i c w o r k p e r f o r m e d in all p a r t s of t h e w o r l d t h r o u g h t h e m a t e r i a l r e c e i v e d . T h u s t h e L i b r a r y h a s to k e e p a n eye b o t h on t h e needs of t h e A c a d e m y , a n d o n its p r i n c i p l e s r e l a t i n g to a c q u i s i t i o n s . At t h e s a m e t i m e it h a s t o develop its i n t e r n a t i o n a l r e l a t i o n s with l i b r a r i e s on a l a r g e scale, a p a r t f r o m e x c h a n g e s , a n d e f f o r t s m u s t b e m a d e to a i d t h e economically u n d e r d e v e l o p e d c o u n t r i e s w i t h specialist l i t e r a t u r e .

T h e m a i n p u r p o s e s of t h e L i b r a r y ' s e x c h a n g e a c t i v i t y a r e :

(1) p e r f o r m i n g t h e e x c h a n g e of t h e A c a d e m y ' s p u b l i c a t i o n s (Acta a n d books p u b l i s h e d by t h e A c a d e m y ) b y b i l a t e r a l a g r e e m e n t ;

(2) t o carry o u t t h e t a s k s r e s u l t i n g f r o m t h e c u l t u r a l e x c h a n g e s a s s u r e d by i n t e r g o v e r n m e n t a l a n d i n t e r - a c a d e m i c a g r e e m e n t s w i t h t h e f r i e n d l y n a t i o n s . Beside t h i s it c o o r d i n a t e s t h e e x c h a n g e a c t i v i t i e s of t h e i n s t i t u t i o n a l l i b r a r y s y s t e m of t h e A c a d e m y , a n d p e r f o r m s — h y special a g r e e m e n t s — t h e e x c h a n g e of n o n - a c a d e m i c scient ific p u b l i c a t i o n s f o r its p a r t n e r s a b r o a d .
