MULTILEVEL GOVERNANCE IN THE EUROPEAN UNION Edit Soós

There are two new phenomena that pose a challenge to the old shaped nation-state idea on the international scene, in the 21th century: supranational integration, and regionalism.

The former governance system, based on nation-state sovereignty, goes through significant changes. The reallocation of authority upwards and downwards and the reform of governance in order to drive forward a wide-ranging democratic process in the European Union have led to the good governance concept in the EU.

The study addresses issues focusing on the role of the EU institutions and the contribution which the local and regional authorities can make to the establishment of more democratic forms of governance at all levels: European, national, regional, and local.

This study explores the relations between Europeanization and multilevel governance.

In particular, it assesses the extent to which Europeanization has promoted multilevel governance in the EU. The study seeks to draw an overview whether multilevel governance provided a stable, institutional framework for the application of a European good governance concept.
