The study attempts to shine a light on a relatively under-analyzed area of media history. It briefly outlines the process whereby the Hungarian German- language media transitioned from being perceived as an ally of the burgeoning ethnic German movement (the start of the 18th century) to an enemy (the turn of the 20th century). The study presents the origins of the Volksdeutsch media, i.e. the early newspapers (the predecessors of the emblematic Sonntagsblatt), along with the overlapping goals and objectives of the Volksdeutsch media and the ethnic German movement. Finally, through the articles that appeared in the pages of the Neue Post, the study offers a look into how factors considered to be dangerous to the ethnic consciousness of the German people via the rein- forcement of a perceived threat were interpreted in a specific way, the result of which was the designation of a convenient and evident enemy.
