By 1940, h o w e v e r , t h e t h i r d (and l a s t ) e d i t i o n of t h e handbook w a s no l o n g e r in p r i n t . R a t h e r t h a n s i m p l y r e i s s u e t h e Vanino m a n u a l , t h e F e r d i n a n d Enke P r e s s p r o j e c t e d a c o m p l e t e l y n e w book: in c o n t r a s t t o t h e old, t h e n e w w o r k would b e w r i t t e n b y a n u m b e r of i n o r g a n i c c h e m i s t s , e a c h a s p e c i a l i s t in t h e g i v e n field.

T h e f i r s t edition of t h e Handbook of P r e p a r a t i v e I n o r g a n i c C h e m i s t r y w a s intended t o fill a g a p in t h e e x i s t i n g l i t e r a t u r e . B e c a u s e it a c c o m p l i s h e d i t s m i s s i o n s o w e l l , it h a s won wide r e s p e c t and r e a d e r s h i p . T h u s , t h e a u t h o r s h a v e b e e n p e r s u a d e d t o i s s u e a s e c o n d , r e v i s e d and e n l a r g e d e d i t i o n , e v e n though a r e l a t i v e l y b r i e f p e r i o d h a s e l a p s e d s i n c e t h e a p p e a r a n c e of t h e f i r s t .

T h e p r e s e n t edition i s m u c h m o r e t h a n a r e v i s i o n of t h e p r e v i o u s w o r k .

S e v e r a l s e c t i o n s had to be c o m p l e t e l y r e w r i t t e n ; in a n u m b e r of c a s e s , t h e c h o i c e of c o m p o u n d s t o b e i n c l u d e d h a s b e e n c h a n g e d ; above a l l , r e c e n t l y d e v e l o p e d p r o c e s s e s , m e t h o d s and a p p a r a t u s could not be n e g l e c t e d .
