Letter regarding Central European University sent to The Times by the Master and Governing Body of Pembroke College, Oxford

Note for media: Pembroke is the college that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán attended while at Oxford as a Soros Scholar 1989-1990.

5 April 2017 Sir,

The Hungarian government has proposed legislative changes that will prevent Budapest’s Central European University from awarding degrees accredited in both the US and Hungary and which will make the university's continued operation as a free and independent international graduate

university impossible. It is of additional concern that the legislative amendments were placed on a fast-track procedure and passed with little debate on 4th April.

On behalf of the Governing Body of Pembroke College, Oxford, I would like to express our deep concern at the proposed changes and emphasise our support for CEU and our commitment to the academic and societal values that it stands for.

We respectfully urge the government to reconsider this legislative change.
